Tie Xi Qu: West of the tracks

Steel Icarus

Has anybody seen this? It's a documentary about the decline of an industrial region in northeastern China around the turn of the millennium. It's over nine hours long and it's brilliant (so far, I'm three hours in). Incredibly intimate, and human. The pace is glacial and it's miserable as billy-o but there are plenty of light moments, and the look of the thing is wonderful considering (or perhaps because of) the director Wang Bing filmed it on a handheld digital camera as he had to film in secret (not from the participants but from the government).

So yeah. I'm enthused about it. Have you seen it, and if not, when will you?*

*Absolutely understand it's not for everyone

Yes, but not the whole thing and I used to know one of the people who did the English subs. Must watch it again and see it all.
