Thread about spiders (not for the arachnophobic!)

An upside down spider

male Araneus diadematus

Not totally arachnaphobic here but quite a bit. I met small spiders in Oz whose venom could do quite a lot of harm, but the hand sized spiders of Africa are perhaps even more vile, nope I don't like them.

The hand sized Old World (African) species are amongst the fastest and most aggressive tarantulas there are plus they have very potent venom, only surpassed by some of the Indian species.

Bloody good pets though. I have a few. :D

So it was drawn to one of your sweaty crevices as it sought out humidity? :hmm:

It was perhaps not one of my more dignified moments.

They're hiding in crisp packets now!

A disturbing change of tactics by the evil 8 legged aliens!
The lovely spiders are there to deal with any problematic insects in the bag - every single bag has a spider in it who escapes once its opened. Obviously the bag of crisps was left out too long so the poor caretaker perished. :(

Can anyone hazard a guess as to what this is about ?
Actually scrub that it's just some poor beetle that got caught in a web and is getting its brains sucked out ...

Did you hear the red-backed spider song while you were in Oz? "There was a deadly red-backed spider on the toilet seat last night. I didn't see him in the dark but boy I felt him bite ..."

My brother had to rescue me from this, this morning 😬😬

I'm usually fine with capturing them and releasing elsewhere, but just stood staring at this one for ages, contemplating what it would do and where it would run if I didn't get it first go. Total wuss 🤦🏾‍♀️

I think I had one in the kitchen last night. Pretty big thing, I got the impression it was just stood there on the floor staring at me.

I left it to do what ever it was going to do and it was gone this morning.

I haven't seen one yet this year, I am sure some years we don't get any in at all, possibly because we're in an upstairs flat - could be the ground floor flats get inundated during the autumn :D

My parents who live in a very rural area always get loads, when I was a kid there we once had one in the bath that was so big you could hear its feet clomping about on the surface of the bath :D ❤️

I accidentally trapped a spider in a door jamb a year ago and I still feel sad about it.

I have two main house spiders (Sandra and Teesha) who live in two different windows. I love the Milky Way effect of their webs against the light. (Sadly, the small huntsman that used to prowl my kitchen seems to have either left the premises or died. Same with the false widow who was tucked into the outside edge of a window so I could observe her from indoors).)

Recently I found this below Teesha’s web. I think it must be the leavings from a meal of a Jersey Tiger moth.

The plate is very small, it’s not a giant moth remains.
