Those Were the Days...

No . . . those were the days!

Mary_Hopkin2.jpg

We still get outstandingly good Pop.

Kylie Minogue, Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Gwen Stefani, Beth Ditto/Gossip, The Ting Tings, The Indelicates... and so on and so on and so on and so on

There's still lots of great pop. And there was as much crap in the charts then as now.

Jesus, sad old bastards who can't see they're being sad old bastards really depress me

Jesus, sad old bastards who can't see they're being sad old bastards really depress me

No-one, no-one can tell me that the UK charts will ever be as good as they were from 1977 - 1980. Loads of great stuff with substance and a very fast turnaround. New and interesting records seemed to appear by the dozen each week. Now the charts are often stagnant with meaningless crap.

Of course there was crap around and there is some good pop about today. It's just the lack of any meaning that makes me a sad old bastard.

Nothing wrong with remembering your youth through rose tinted glasses. Things were better back then. Even the computers.

The kids of today are fucking lightweights

Oh fuck off.

Go look up a random chart from 1977 and see what rot you're talking. Anyway, the market is totally different now. Charting records sell less, they're even less representative of what's really going on than they used to be.

Cunt :)

Well we've ended up with a different chart, but my point still stands. If you can't be arsed to find good music, it means you're a lazy fucker, not that music is worse than it used to be.

Another sad, bitter old cunt railing at the world cos he doesn't understand it any more. :D

I'm finding and making plenty of good music. My problem is with the bland crap in the charts today.

I understand everything :p

Three or four classics in there, but mostly wank :D

Where's this golden age you're talking about, Stanley?

you say there's quality on your list but surely that's subjective Stanley. i can only see three on your list i quite like - and i was around at the time. yep, i'm another old git. :D

what i don't get is why you think pop records back then were more 'meaningful'

I'm finding and making plenty of good music. My problem is with the bland crap in the charts today.

Why? You're not the demographic - hardly anyone is, these days. Why do you give a fuck what people are buying in Tesco? Does it tell you anything about the music being made today, in any useful sense?

I understand everything :p

Anyway, how DARE you be posting on here about the charts! Don't you know there are children dying in Iraq every day while you're here doing NOTHING!! Nothing, I tell you!! CUNTS

Three or, Four classics! Exactly.

The Specials, Joe Jackson, The Ramones, plus plus plus.

I think you've just confirmed my belief.

Think I've made my point clear enough. If you can't see it, then I guess you're missing something :)

No, Stanley. Your point is wrong, for several reasons:

a) there is no golden age in charts
b) charts aren't generally where you find quality music anyway
c) THERE ARE CHILDREN DYING EVERY DAY IN IRAQ!!!

Why? You're not the demographic - hardly anyone is, these days. Why do you give a fuck what people are buying in Tesco? Does it tell you anything about the music being made today, in any useful sense?

Yes. Exactly my point. Again.

Anyway, how DARE you be posting on here about the charts! Don't you know there are children dying in Iraq every day while you're here doing NOTHING!! Nothing, I tell you!! CUNTS

Fair point. I feel guilty.

Read your OP - "when pop meant something" (citing the fucking Stranglers as an example :D ) and then explain how i've confirmed it.

Pop means as much and as little as it ever did.

Go and get drunk and insult everybody then - that'll help

You know, I never do that IRL. The internet is a good place to vent a little steam occasionally. People shouldn't take it so seriously.

I have a friend here who laughs whenever I take the piss IRL. Try taking the piss on the internet and she's deeply offended. Strange.

Anyway, enough twaddle. That was a shit argument.

The charts used to be better than they are now.

All agreed? Good :)

A couple of classics, the best thing you've bolded is a reissue of a song from the mid-60s and an AWFUL lot of utter wank.

Anyway, back to the OP - did pop MEAN more then, Stanley? Like what the Stranglers did? (snigger)

...

Anyway, back to the OP - did pop MEAN more then, Stanley? Like what the Stranglers did? (snigger)

Yes. It did mean more. Point taken that the charts aren't what they used to be, and The Stranglers weren't a real reflection of what was going on at the time (although they did make some bloody good pop songs). However, with politically motivated bands regularly charting and making prime time TV appearances to huge audiences - pop did mean much more back then.

Like you say; the chart demographic has changed and the world has changed. TV isn't the force it used to be for one, but where can the equivalent of acts like John Copper Clarke, Stiff Little Fingers etc find such large audiences today? Pop was much more back then.
