The Upsetter

:hmm: :(

Perhaps we'll catch him on-not-too-bad a night? <clutches straws ... >
You never know what he's going to be like...I was fortunate enough to see him when he was relatively lucid, due to being off the weed. Just don't expect to hear the 'Cold Sweat'/'Black IPA' Upsetters sound replicated - or indeed the Black Ark recording alchemy - on stage...ska's advice about lowering expectations is sound advice ;) Nevertheless, how often can you say you are seeing a living legend on stage? Enjoy!

Theres a few reviews of him live on this thread IIRC - like Scalyboy says, dont expect the past, but think of it like one of those ITV An Evening With... nights, with Lee doing spoken word improv with a slightly wack backing band <I enjoyed the show when I saw him last, but as long as you dont expect too much it'll be great fun.

Scratch was a bit shit but amusing when we saw his "art" show with Adrian Sherwood at the Big Chill. Mind you everything was a bit shit at the Big Chill.:(

Just heard this on roots lab - not sure if its Lee on the desk (in fact its not it Sean De Laire), but Black Ark for sure

This came out in November 2012 and made a few reggae fans top albums of the year lists, UK act called The Breadwinners and done in a very faithful to the Black Ark style - really rate this:

"This vinyl edition of “Dubs Unlimited” is that rare beast, the Triple A “All Analogue Album”, recorded on analogue multitrack, mixed to quarter inch analogue tape and cut direct to the lathe – not a ProTool in sight!"
<<<proof is in the sound - no plugin does that ;)

One of the Breadwinners has a show on rootslab too

that is pretty impressive how they nailed the sound. they should have pretended it was undiscovered lee perry from the 70s and cleaned up. well maybe not quite cleaned up.

hardware doesnt lie, but its great playing too

the Alborosie dub album did the same thing but with recreating Tubbys set up, or as close as - i think it has its own twist though. I think its a great record in its entirety

wow, that really is great quality, loving it! sounds band-ish as well, even though it was mainly done by one guy.
have you got the full album? just hovering above the 'buy' bottom....

yeah it's great remember it from the 50 years JA thread, I think. Some of the tunes really do it for me, esp the Scientist-ish ones, eg Real Dub Story. You are right, they are not only going for re-creation, but add their own flavour. Creative stuff!

Sort of Upsetter :)

Scratch sold/traded the rhythm behind Junior Byles Beat Down Babylon & Informer Men to Keith Hudson, who in turn recorded I Roy on it under the name U Roy Junior.

Loving this foot-stomping tune and the choppy dub side. Label says Tapper Zukie at the controls...but I reckon it has an Upsetter feel to it, could it have been recorded at the Black Ark?
It's on the Black Ark Nuggets channel so that may be a clue :)

nice :cool: unmistakable black ark drum kit
but it doesnt sound like lee on the desk - thats not his touch - just goes to show its not just as easy as having the right kit
