Lee Perry, the mighty Upsetter, turns 77 this month. Upsetting! This is a selection of some of my favourite Perry productions, with an emphasis on the more esoteric songs in his incredible catalog. This upsetting selection includes the the wonderful "Play On Mr. Music", the lost and found track from the famous Roots Rock Reggae documentary, and many other killer tunes. Okay, okay, let's take it from here...

Its one of my favourite podcasts, recommend it

this is great (1976) Charlo: Locks Lion (Discomix) - I think Augustus Pablo at the controls at the Black Ark

how do you get time to listen to all this good stuff Ska!?
 it is a full time distraction from what im meant to be doing! I have tried to streamline my life to squeeze in as much music time as possible (next to no tv for example), but its less time than youd think. I commute nearly two hours a day and try and load up new mixes on the little nanoipod so that fills in a lot of time.

Lee Perry-related music is probably my favourite in the world, so Im always coming back to the Black Ark Nuggets channel on youtube - already mentioned on this thread - this one was a new upload from the channel. Luckily there is a big enough catalogue there to keep things coming...

Happy birthday Lee Perry for yesterday btw. Born on the cusp of Pisces and Aries, which is the last day of the astrological cycle, and the first day of the new (like new year basically). which if you were to believe in such things as affecting you character would make you both the wisest and most naive. :) i dont believe in it, but it seems kind of suiting for him

great show. my favourite has to be the I Threes:

yeah thats really grown on me - wasnt sure on first listen but its really won me over - the dub is pedestrian but the vocal is so sweet

This has to be one of the maddest lee perry tracks

check all the cuts and edits
Yes its top class isn't it, quite disorientating all those edits! Good to hear an extended version. I read somewhere that the lyric is aimed at rival producer Niney the Observer, using the (no doubt unfounded) story that he'd lost his finger after having been caught cattle-rustling by an irate famer... who then administered his own brand of JA country justice :D "Dinah, pass mi machete"

, his mournful voice v appropriate for the theme
although that blackbird tunes is about racism and oppression I think birds do have a tough old life, seemed appropriate to birds too: Insanely high infant mortality, just as much chance again to die young, perpetual hunger, endless predators, struggle after struggle...but they do get to fly.

And sing :)
