The Upsetter

I rarely get excited when another "lost" Black Ark tune gets "discovered". Too many times its a below par, under-rehearsed, never got finished tune which wasn't deemed good enough for release at the time or the 5th cut of something released to death with extra cow bells, but this one is gold. New York's DKR have unearthed a pre-Black Uhuru 1977 Michael Rose gem recorded at the peak of Perry's powers at the Black Ark and it's a killer. Not on Youtube yet but here's a link to their website with sound clip:

World Crisis - Michael Rose

They've also reissued Better Days by the Carltons, a lovely slice of 1973 Perry produced roots by Carlton Mannings (brother of the Abyssinians), and lead of Studio 1 favourites Carlton & The Shoes:

I had a big nuggets session last night...really ought to download all theses tracks incase of a youtube wipeout - much of the channels videos havnt had a non-vinyl release (and so much lee perry catalogue has)...incredible resource of rarities

(im in love with that anthea and donna track!)

Yeah, do it! Pleeease :) Great finds here ska invita . Thanks mate.

that bump reminds me, this is well worth checking out...as said upthread, for me Manchesters Breadwinners are the heirs to the Black Ark sound - this radio show is a review of their releases and also has lots of forthcoming material from the new album, out November 15
Breadwinners releases & dubplates - sneak preview of the new vocal LP - Versionist radio 09/10/15

They're doing a lot more vocal material now, which doesnt always hit in the way the instrumentals and dubs do, but i still love them to bits
definitely a few killer cuts on the new lp - well worth checking this show out

Out of all his output, what's the best Lee Perry LP for the absolute Lee Perry beginner?

It's sort of difficult because he spans the entire history from 60's ska to now, but generally the 70's roots stuff he produced at his Black Ark studio is considered his peak of genius and is my favourite.

The best compilation is a 3 CD box set from Island Records called Arkology:

Just on a little record hunt and came across a tune by "The Upsetters" from 1960...discogs described them as Little Richard's backing band...seems very likely to me thats where the name wouldve been "inspired" from, as Lee was already ear to the ground in music (especially US rnb) from that age

Good gig coming up at Jazz Caf 21st FEb

In all honesty im not a big fan of those Sherwood/Perry Lps (or any post Ark Perry stuff), but he does a great live show I think and its always different on a system than at home.

UK dub godfather, Adrian Sherwood presents a live a/v attack covering his 35-year adventure with the Mighty Upsetter.

Diving deep into the original multi-tracks, Sherwood delivers a set of live mixes from classic Sherwood X Lee Perry albums – Time Boom X The Devil Dead, Secret Laboratory, Dubsetter, Rainford and their latest and greatest, Heavy Rain. He’ll also be delving into the legendary Upsetter Productions & Black Ark archives.

Featuring visuals from long-time Perry collaborator Peter Harris. A not-to-be-missed live sonic adventure.

Id not heard this before, the original black ark cut of punky reggae party - aka part 3
