The Ochlympics: Glasgow 2014

JTG

Angry about not being able to be an astronaut.
Yeah there's some kind of sartorial discussion going on with the other thread but we need to talk sport.

The usual peculiar gathering of some big countries who are good at the sort of sports they have at this, some huge countries who are less good and some titchy non-countries/specks on a map. Similarly it's a weird collection of some proper sports (swimming, cycling, athletics), some Sunday afternoon pastimes (bowls etc) and some proper comedy sports as well (rugby sevens, arf arf).

I predict England to finish top of the medal table, though I suppose Australia might. Norfolk Island won't.

Off you go.

It's just like the Olympics but more rubbish. Running and jumping and that. pfft. School sports day with the kids we (Britain) used to bully or sommat.

Do they got badminton? I like badminton. Especially those WTF games where they try to lose every point and then get disqualified. Totally out there.

It's just like the Olympics.

Except for the Olympics the whole of the U.K. had to pay for the stupid thing, but for this, only Scotland has to pay for it.

I thought of seeking asylum elsewhere, then I realised that if I remain in my low-class-not-to-be-shown-to-tourists place,I won't need to care about it much.

Apart from the waste of money, that is.

Would that be badminton with the little shuttlecocks, not the badminton involving lots of horses? Pity, 'cos the horses would be good to look at, really.

I think I played badminton once or twice, in about the same way as I might have played that horrible squash game once or twice, as in long ago, and never more than once or twice. :) Too much like healthy exercise.

Still, I have to admit, "shuttlecock" is a word to conjure with. So to speak.

... those WTF games where they try to lose every point and then get disqualified.

Now, that sounds sort of fun. Do they do that? I might go and take lessons: a game where I could win by losing seems interesting. :D

Yes, badminton happens. But no Chinese people trying to lose to avoid playing each other in the next round in this one I'm afraid.

Damn, I had genuinely thought that trying to lose was, for some reason, a genuine part of this game. Honestly! I mean, rules of games are a great mystery, so I thought this could be a genuine one.

Now you have removed all the mystique. :(

you simply have to watch the video of the China vs Korea womens doubles at London 2012 where they just play to lose. It's genius.

I've got the opening ceremony on. I like a good opening ceremony and I like mocking a rubbish one.

I hear Rod Stewart is involved in this one :hmm:

Though I bet not every Glaswegian agreed with the bit about it being a good thing the shipyards are gone.

I must say our stadium is looking pretty braw in the overhead copter shots even if it is really weird seeing it without a pitch.

someone on my fb paid £180 for tickets and has been bumped to the gods (£20 ticket seats) and is raging about the incompetence of it all.
