The Monochrome Set are back!

I heard Gideon Coe on Tuesday saying there would be a Monochrome Set session on Wednesday, I assumed it was an old Peel session.
Is that Maida Vale?

Yep. It's a big old studio complex. Very BBC. I felt quite honoured to be there: the place is stuffed with amazing musical history and there's loads of wonderful old gear in there. We were in this studio:
  • Studio MV3 is another large studio (equal in size to MV2). With a SSL 9000J series analogue desk installed, MV3 is used for a large number of BBC Radio 2 programmes and some BBC Radio 1 session recordings and live audience shows. Bing Crosby made his last recording session in this studio in 1977 – 3 days before he died of a heart attack on a golf course in Spain.
  • Audio Engineering Society UK » Technical Visit to the BBC Maida Vale Studios, London

We recorded four songs in total: three were broadcast live and a fourth one (I think) was played on Gideon Coe's show after.

well!
- my best bud (for a time) worked as a paralegal after college and met JD Haney, who had moved here to new york and was also working as a paralegal
- that bud and i were in a dance band for a few years and i was the drummer
- we did a few originals but mostly covers, including Ein Symphonie des Grauens (iirc)
- so if that's still on the band's set list, editor and i have played a few of the same figures
- i still have some of their 45s. love them.

*goes for a lie down*

We played The Talking Heads in Southampton last night and even had a bit of a mosh pit going on - it was a fun gig! One couple had even planned their trip from Canada to coincide with the gig - happily they seemed to enjoy it.

The venue is lovely - they were gentrified out of their original premises, but their new place is really nice: there's a front bar for free acoustic/jazz gigs, while the main room has a good sized stage and a great PA system.

Coming back to playing live music after - cough - quite a few years away, I've been really impressed by how good the venues are (although I am playing in a bigger band so that's going to play a part too - but I've done enough support gigs in shoddy venues in the past).

We did a session for Resonance FM today and I learnt that I don't perform very well when I have to be in a studio at 1030am!

I like the station though. It's a nice little set up they've got.

So Saturday's gig was a sell out and I got to play on the same stage as Kate Bush made her debut show!

I used a lovely old Rogers vintage drum kit too (with the addition of my usual cowbell and fairy lights!)

Next UK gigs are:

04/03/2017 - CARDIFF Globe
25/03/2017 - MANCHESTER Gullivers
08/04/2017 - LONDON Lexington
12/05/2017 - ISLE OF WIGHT, Quay Arts
13/05/2017 - BRIGHTON Hope & Ruin
27/05/2017 - YORK - Crescent
28/05/2017 - LIVERPOOL Music Room

<Contemplates Cardiff :confused: >

I don't like the venue very much, mainly because it's a bit out of town. But still ... My one and only previous Monochrome Set gig was over twenty five years ago (at the Venue in New Cross) ... and this gig's on a Saturday.

coming to NYC?
I wish I wish I wish!

I've learnt that playing America is REALLY expensive for bands, with work permits and other documentation costing an absolute fortune, so sadly my dream of playing NYC looks like staying on hold for now.

We were booked into the Moon Club but then they downsized.
