The John McDonnell File

Let's see what happens on the 13th.

Corbyn might yet become PM somehow.

A cobbled together coalition might force Labour to put forward an alternative PM.

Labour holding, or even gaining, ground but still losing might open the door for a "better" successor to Corbyn to carry on the "project"

A clear defeat and I think you're looking at the Left of the Party leaving, dropping out and being marginalised and the appointment of someone like Starmer and a steady decline as the Party gazes wistfully at newly appointed Lord Umunna as it scraps for the same 20% of votes as the LibDems and a resurgent Green Party.

I'll bet on it being Rebecca Long-Bailey after Corbyn goes.

RLB now close to neck and neck with Starmer in the betting, and when you consider :

- it almost has to be a woman next
- there's just no way the left of the Party (who'll still be v much in control post Dec 12th, regardless) will accept Starmer
- + Starmer has severe charisma bypass issues
- Laura Pidcock just isnt ready,
- Angela Rayner doesn't have RLB's steely chops
- Thornberry is a non starter

9-2 / 5-1 etc is looking generous to me ( am having a punt personally )

I'm not sure the it has to be a woman next time thing is going to fly in the face of the low-key misogyny of wide swathes of the Labour movement.

I am not a fan of John McDonnell, but good for him in committing to support Action for ME and pushing for more research. He’s close enough to the political mainstream to be a valuable ally and he’s making sensible economic arguments: it’s a million miles away from the embarrassing support of Steve Topple.

I don't think any mps can be real allies, not if the goal is societal change of any recognisable type. Dennis skinner said this to my face in 91 or early 92, in the context of the anti-poll tax movement. And I see no reason to change my view even 30+ years later.
