The UN Security Council held its first ever session devoted to discrimination facing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community on Monday, with a focus on the plight of LGBT individuals in Islamic State controlled territory in Iraq and Syria. But advocates say that despite the increased attention, basic steps in the resettlement process for individuals persecuted for their sexual and gender identity are still arduous, and too few spots are open for those fleeing conflict in the two countries.

Syrian Subhi Nahas and an Iraqi man who used the pseudonym Adnan testified before Council members at a closed-door, informal "Arria-Formula" meeting organized by the US and Chile. While Nahas was able to flee his native Syria last year, Adnan spoke from an undisclosed location, out of concern for his safety.

By Nahas' own account, IS is only the latest — and most extreme — group in Syria to target the LGBT community. He told Council members that the government began a media campaign to frame opponents of the regime as homosexuals at the start of country's civil war in 2011.

"Soon after, authorities waged systematic raids on locals where gay people met," said Nahas. "Many were arrested and tortured."

tbh i am an admirer of a lot of the research produced by the american military. but there's always that caveat that it was produced by the american military for their own purposes...

Honestly, brainwashing really is a shit term for multiple reasons.

Firstly its origins in shit US propaganda that sought to explain why 'decent Americans' might express sympathy with communist ways - most notably in regards to GI's captured in the Korean war.

From there the media went bonkers about it and it quickly entered popular culture in rather a broad and loose form. Whilst most often to be found in a cold-war setting, phildwyer is wrong to suggest it became obsolete with the end of the cold war - the concept is alive and well, for example in discussions about cults.

The concept was even somewhat compatible with psychology at some points rather a long time ago, but the pop culture version of brainwashing is such a crude and erroneous concept that psychology has moved well beyond it now, although there are various phenomenon that might be considered successors.

As far as Im concerned there is already a crap pop-culture concept of what ISIS is, one that overlaps with war propaganda. It's a challenge to avoid this completely because there are a number of extreme features of ISIS which makes it hard not to turn them into a caricature, but personally I'd not want to add shit concepts like brainwashing to this mix at least. There are plenty of other words to choose from, indoctrination for example avoids some of this crap baggage and at least begins to point towards the more nuanced reality when it comes to influence.
