The Islamic state

The indian teachers kidnapped by isis have now said they were treated quite well.

There are two (of the four) of them left over there according to that piece, not surprising that the released two aren't slating their captors.

As for the two charged blokes, it perhaps isn't a surprise but it may well result in less grimly comical Youtube clips where they attempt to justify the unjustifiable.

Pickman's model It strikes me odd that if some bloke in tower hamlets says 'we should support the islamic state of iraq and syria because it is ruled by the law of God and it will protect the muslim ummah against its enemies' he will immediately be arrested
but if a saudi or turkish diplomat has a meeting with theresa may and david cameron and says, 'we need a state in the middle east that is based on a strong foundation of islamic principles and will provide a military counterweight to iran and other aggressive regimes. We need to assist the group which is fighting for this goal and not dismiss them out of hand' they will be listened to, and probably agreed with, and definitely not thrown into jail

that's because of the auld rule that MIGHT makes RIGHT.

By the way does anyone know whats going on with the control of terrain in Syria? I usually read the ISW update but they have not updated it for ages. There doesn't seem to be that much info about the military side of Daesh operations in Iraq and Syria for a few weeks now which hopefully a sign that not much is happening.

Thats fucked up. I guess their tourism industry is a write off now? The way Daesh want it.
Maybe, I'm not so sure. I still overhear people discussing holidays in Sharm El Sheikh, they would seem to be entirely unaware or uncaring of the political situation there. Here I'm talking about the Arab spring and the counter-revolution more than Daesh. I guess we'll see.

Kidnapping a foreign worker doesn't usually cause a tourist industry to be written off. Tourism to Cairo has probably taken a number of knocks since the uprising against Mubarak, but overall Egyptian tourism is somewhat insulated by virtue of geographically isolated tourist resorts. If Daesh had a principal aim of damaging Egyptian tourism, it would likely target those locations.

Yeah i know loads of people who have been there. I knew someone who went there at the height of the bloody massacres by Sisi etc (or shortly afterwards) and didnt appear aware of it at all.

As for how they could do it in Cairo. Well ISIS can pop up almost anywhere, anytime because all it takes is some existing locals to adopt the brand.

And kidnappings are the sort of thing that can be pulled off in a manner often described as 'audacious'. They probably aren't that hard to pull off if you do some planning and your target doesn't have his own security team.
