The Islamic state

Do you reckon we'll end up going in on the ground kebabking?

depends what you mean...

we've already got people on the ground - split into two functions: training, logistics and intelligence support to the Iraqi government and the KRG totalling around 300, and a seperate Iraqi government approved UK SF operation that provides targetting for airpower and on-the-ground raids against high value IS targets.

i take the view that some additions to that are on the cards, and would strengthen local forces considerably without having Brits do the actual fighting - attack helicopters for direct fire support, heavy lift helicopters to provide battlefield mobilty and logistics support, and a significant UK ground force with armour, artillery etc.. to provide the security at whatever Iraqi air base/airport to used to base them. easily 1500-2000 strong with the various techs required to keep this stuff in the air.

do i think that Cameron is remotely interest in sending the 5000 strong 4 (Mechanized) Brigade from Catterick to charge through northern Iraq to put al-Baghdadi's head on a stick? no, not in the least - after Iraq(pt 2) and Afghanistan(pt 4), i don't believe there is any political appetite to get involved in a large scale, long term op on the ground a long way from home, and secondly i think that Cameron will take the view that if the local/regional governments forces who have more to lose can't or won't get involved to that extent, then why should he...?

Shit, I am hearing that Daesh have attacked some volunteers who were helping to rebuild Kobane, includuing a Western volunteer. 10 dead, 30 injured. No link as yet and therefore unconfirmed.

Apparently It was the border between Kobane and Sürüç.

Video here (probably NSFW)

A blast has occurred at the Amara Culture Center in Suruç district of Urfa where members of the Socialist Youth Associations Federation (SGDF) coming from various cities have been staying before their planned cross into Kobanê to help the reconstruction works today. Many casualties are reported at the scene.

And above all, Israel.

The Neo-cons in America had been planning proxy wars on Israel's behalf for ten years before 9/11 gave them their opportunity. The plan was to reduce Israel's main enemies to chaos and disorder, and they're determined to finish the job while the iron's still relatively hot.

The one significant problem they have left is Iran, and it seems that they didn't quite get the excuse they needed this time. But they'll soon be back with another.

If they were serious about taking on IS militarily , even from the air , then from a military standpoint the destruction of IS supply lines would be a top priority . Everyone knows they run from the Turkish border , originating inside Turkish territory . There's not a thing being said about that , nothing being done about that. No pressure on Turkey, total silence . There's merely a pretence that it isn't happening . Therefore the entire business is farcical . It's window dressing .

Once a coalition air presence is in the skies over Syria with a united
front the invasion of Syrian airspace becomes a fait accompli . Then after a suitable interlude you'll have MPs ...and the entirety of the British media...asking why they're protecting civilians from IS but not " the equally barbarous and abhorrent Assad ". And calls for " safe zones " and " no fly zones " . You can see where that goes from there . Al Qaeda get their own airforce , yet again . Yet another troublesome state destroyed . In a piecemeal fashion . Bit by bit .

it's the auld bush doctrine: if there's a choice between two options, choose the one which will make things worse.

What should be done about it? There's nothing to be gained by antagonizing Turkey. And from the perspective of Turkish realpolitik it makes perfect sense to use ISIS as proxies against the YPG and similar Kurdish militias.

It might have made sense a year or a couple of years ago when they were just another armed group, but now its hard to see how it does now - either IS remains in place as a state and inevitably destabilizes Turkey, or the Iraqi / Syrian / Iranian / Kurdish forces, together with the US, beat IS and Erdogan has to deal with an expanded and much more heavily armed Kurdish state on his border.

Burn the bastards, immolate them, what a awful tragedy, young people doing some good in the world, now gone and others mutilated, a whole new left gone as well.
