Scott later issued the following statement:

I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. Counter-terror police have issued an appeal for information about three Londonschoolgirls who are believed to have fled to Islamic State-controlled Syria.

The three friends left their homes in east London last Tuesday and caught a flight to Istanbul, Turkey, from where they are feared to have tried to travel to the frontline in Syria.

Detectives have issued images of Shamima Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 16, and an unnamed third friend travelling through Gatwick airport as they issued an urgent appeal for them to come home.

Misguided, I'd say. And not a great show for the authorities; a mutual school-friend of the 3 went to the IS in December and all 3 have, apparently, be spoken to by the OB. The story also suggests a certain degree of gullibility and naivety on the part of the parents.
 
I hope I see them although probably too late. I would drag them to volunteer with the millions of Syrians who've had to flee their homeland as a result of the civil war. If they want to do something good they could start by helping to educate the children who aren't going to school, they could gave brought medication for the people who are suffering because they're unregistered and can't access health care. But no, they're off for their glory. Maybe the snow will have held them up. Weather has been atrocious.

A guy from my partners home town went to join ISIS. His family home got burned down as people were so furious to have had a "traitor" among them.

i couldn't cut the finger of my most despised enemy let alone his throat.

maybe, like i have seen with football firms at millwall over the years, they sort of attract the lost and faintly or strongly psychopathic. the cruel cunts, the violent ones, etc.

yep, it can't purely be about the west, or for that matter the contents of the quran the way the breivikites would have us believe. There's an element of horrible pornographic lust and sexual sadism in individuals like this that I don't think can be ignored. What factors have nourished this though, I don't know. But there's something very wrong with our society I think that such individuals can be produced and that they can then have the opportunity to travel across the world and behead people they've never met. Not that that excuses JJ in any way. I can't understand why someone could do this.

I think that - at least in terms of most of the spectaculars carried out by IS - it actually has just been about the West. They know what gets attention (or "enrages the kuffar" as some amiable folk on twitter would say) and it isnt going on and on about how fair they collect and distribute zakat.

While it's tempting to label such people as psychopathic, it's not a label I'd apply willy-nilly. Sometimes it's more complicated than psychiatric and/or psychological pathology, and often that complexity is tied up with peoples' need to believe in something, whether that's a religious or a political ideology, or support for a football team. Find a true believer, and very often you've found someone who can be shaped into whatever you want them to be. Their desire to fit in will do the rest.

Society has always produced such individuals. A claim could even be made that modern society produces fewer such individuals that a pre-Enlightenment society did. Your "pornographic lust" is for partially licence: it's not comprised of any special set of depravities on the part of the practitioner, but of the freedom and the licence that their belief and the fact of conquest gives them. Ordinary people can do horrifically and disgustingly extraordinary things.
