The dog thread is better than the cat thread, because it features dogs.

Mongrels are free though, aren’t they? Never envisioned having to pay for a pet

This is a fair point.

There are several breeds I particularly like and they're powerful breeds that need to be trained and kept properly. I want that responsibility and am happy to pay for a well bred example so I can hit the ground running.

That said, I don't think I've paid for any of my dogs I've had. They were all either given to me or i acted as an unofficial rescue. Perhaps the right dog is the one that just turns up

There are a few reasons why I can’t go rescue, my main dog sitter will hopefully be my brother and he has young kids (and will also get a dog) and he isn’t prepared to risk a rescue. And I’m not sure I can necessarily meet their criteria either

despite their known issues I’m very tempted towards a cavalier as I had such fond memories of our one as a child.

Yeah every single one I’ve met has been amazing with people and that really is a strong driver for me as well as the memories

Definitely a dog of that sort of size

I must research how to get a dog ahead of the autumn.
look at your local[ish] rescues, preferably the no-kill shelters.
I did a little 'on-site' dog-walking and kitten wrangling in the months just prior to rescuing Ben
Sad to say, there are lots of dogs and pups being dumped / surrendered.

e2a - our local Vet & pet food suppliers all have "free to good home" notice boards

And the breadsticks that were with it

I even heard him do it. He came on the bed for his bedtime dentastix type treat and a few minutes later as I was drifting off to sleep I heard rustling on the sofa. Which means he planned it - waited til I was drifting off and went back upstairs to where I'd left them

We tried to rescue with our first two. Got let down loads, some wouldn’t consider us at all because we both work, some because we had cats.

We joined two breed rescues but never got a call because they don’t get them in.

In theory, I would like to rescue but it’s much more complex than simply picking a dog you like. Traumatised dogs can be a huge amount of work (all dogs are). Saying that, there’s usually plenty of puppies coming into rescue centres who won’t have that difficult or unknown history.

I’m broody for a pup. Despite still having two, I feel like I need to fill the Lucy gap and find myself browsing for Old English Sheepdogs. I have named my pup. 😄

Mr Looby is different in that he feels like he won’t be able to have another OES again which makes me sad. Hopefully that will change as I love them and can’t wait to welcome Dotty. 😉

I really want a dog but I live alone in a city centre and when I eventually go back to work (I'm on a health enforced career break at the moment) it really is far from ideal and just wouldn't be fair on the tail waggy thing.

One thing rescue places can insist on is 6ft hedges/walls/fences round the garden, which is where I'd have difficulty. I think I've finally (yeh yeh) sealed off the breaks in the hedge. I should have done this when I got him but thought I was going to have to put up 50 yards of chicken-wire type fence. I've pruned back some hazels and a buddleia and layered them into what I realized half way through is a dead hedge :)
A couple of places he's just run straight up the hedge and through the layering so I've added fortifications (second photo if this works)

We'll see, but at least today I heard him barking furiously at a squirrel from inside the garden, rather than two fields away :)

Looks idyllic where you are.

I've seen the wall/fence thing requirement thing too and it makes me giggle a little bit. Kail can jump onto a six foot wall from a standing position. He's that hard headed, literally so, that he'd go straight through a fence or hedge if he felt like it.

We are constantly filling holes in our hedges both sides, it’s so annoying. If it was our house I’d rip the lot out and fence it because it’s such a pain in the arse to secure and then foxes get through or under and rip the wire we’ve put along.

Like tonysingh Humphrey could probably do a 6 foot fence if he tried, my childhood dog could.

Whereas I have to lift Cassie on the bed sometimes. :D
She tries to jump but she just has little rituals about jumping up things and lots of false starts.
She does dig though and I've caught her making the hedgehog route bigger to get to nextdoor neighbour's tennis balls!

Pet stairs 👍

There’s a 6 ft fence here, next door have a rescue which has never come through my side so that’s a good sign.
