The dog thread is better than the cat thread, because it features dogs.

Humphrey was sick twice yesterday and off his food and grumpy this morning so we took him to the vet. An hour before the appointment he was jumping up at treat cupboard and running round again the massive faker. 😄

The vet thinks he’s underweight though. He’s 18.9k and would be better at around 20.
We’ve been slightly concerned for a while but at the last visit in November the vet scored him a 4 on the scale they use which is the lower end of normal and wasn’t worried at all.
Vet today scored at a 3 on same weight.

No other signs of ill health at all and he’s full of energy so we are upping his food for a month to see if he gains anything. If he doesn’t or he loses, he’ll need tests.
My instinct is he’s just a naturally lean dog, I hope so.

From the Dogs Trust

Every week 1000 people are making the call to give up their dog. We can give you the advice, training and support you need to stay together – through the bad times, the good and everything in between.

and

We've opened some temporary dog food banks for anyone struggling to feed their dog(s) in these difficult times.

I do like the Dogs Trust - as I've said they give you a million 3rd party insurance against dog attacking people things for being a member (£25/year).

:(

was thinking when reading it "wonder if they had dogs with them" and indeed they did.

On 29 September 2020, the couple also had their daughter’s two dogs, which were on fixed leads.

The inquest heard they entered a field at JA Mitchell & sons’ farm, and followed a public footpath up a steep hill, unaware that several dozen cows with calves were at the top of the slope.

...

“I feel there should be some signage there that says, ‘There are cattle with calves.’ Had that been the case, we would definitely not have entered.”

...

The farmer, Martin Mitchell, whose family have run the farm since 1963, said he had not been aware of any problems with his cattle being “aggressive”, but said cows with calves did not mix well with dogs because they “see a dog as a predator”.

A couple years back one of my fuckwit neighbours proudly announced she'd bought a staffy puppy for 1800 quid. One glance tells you it wasn't a Staffy, it was more a bull breed cross of some type.

Two-years on and she's not had her done and now her dog is pregnant from an unorganised breeding, down the local park. :hmm: apparently the father is a Staff. I'd have issue allowing an in-season female off leash but even then there's a window of opportunity to prevent pregnancy before they knot up.

Anyway, some earwigging has revealed she's she's gonna make money from it, she's planning a holiday. The puppies will cost £1500 with half as unreturnable deposit and she's popped them all-over gumtree and free ads.

I feel like screaming 😱

It's bonkers how much people pay for even mixed breeds these days. We went went to stay with some people last year and they had other guests staying. They'd paid over £1500 for a lab x staffie. It was a lovely dog, but still.

With Willow we paid the costs of her birth and the jabs. It was a bit more pricey as Mum had to have a cesarean, think it was like £400.

We paid £380 for Sunny, which felt fair - just enough to cover costs, with maybe a small amount of profit.
Before we found her we contacted a couple of KC registered Jack Russell breeders and they both wanted £1000+
We didn't care about the pedigree of the dog, we were more than happy with a farm bred Russell, which is exactly what we got in the end- after a chance conversation in a pub garden!

As pedigree as you like, bloodlines going back generations; house-trained; healthy; low maintenance; pretty & yours for only £180:

I'd love more dogs (and cats) but the cost of putting just one in day care is pretty horrific.

Greyhounds can be left alone for the day. Big walk in the morning (or 20 minutes running around like a maniac if you've got open fields) and they'll sleep for 7 hours...

eta then have a piss and a zoom around the garden and sleep for another 5...

I'd love a greyhound but I rather think they'd be too delicate to play with Kail. He can be....eager.

Happy to be proven wrong mind you.

Albert was £250 from a ropey farm in Suffolk. Not enough research, could well have been puppy farmed but given his breed (working beardie) my instinct is he was just a result of the owner of the dogs being a bit slack and greedy.

Lucy was £600. Adopted from her original owners at 11 months. She’d have been over 2k from the breeder as she was a pedigree with show champions etc in her line. Paying for her did piss me off a bit because I thought it was a bit greedy of them when they couldn’t keep her but maybe it was to make sure someone was serious? Actually it turned out they’d breached the contract with their breeder and she should have been returned to them.

Humphrey was just over 2k including bringing him to the UK. Again very good pedigree, healthy line etc
Huge amount of money but actually no more than pre lockdown. Lots of breeders got really greedy because of demand but our breed club members didn’t so that was the price before Covid. We were lucky we’d been given some money.

I don’t need pedigrees, it’s not a status thing and we won’t be showing but I’m passionate about two breeds that are rare and nearly endangered so it’s always going to be pricey and actually to keep that breed going we need more puppies to be born (responsibly).

Not sure how we’ll pay for the next one though!

Outdoors they can just run off if Kail gets a bit frisky :D

I hear you though; I could see that play getting out of hand indoors might be pretty traumatic all round. Otoh, greyhounds are skinny yet fairly big units - 25-30kg - and can stand their ground. Blue's definitely a 'run away run away' character; Nico didn't take any shit off anything - GSD; Doberman; Staff etc.
