The Cycling Chat Thread

I was cycling down a nice quiet b-road this morning when I was overtaken by a motorbike. The rider had plenty of room to go past me - and as he did so he shouted "Get off the fucking road you fucking wanker" - and then sped off shaking his head in disgust. How weird...

Around half an hour later - the same motor bike rider came back down the road - this time coming towards me on the other side of the road - I probably wouldn't have recognised him had he not taken the opportunity to call me a wanker again - this time while making the wanker sign :)

I wonder if he treats all cyclists with such high regard or had singled me out for some reason...
It's not you, it's just certain road users. i've had similar and again with no reason.
Good, balanced doc from Richard Bilton on BBC's Panorama
Their survey suggests 3rd of drivers think cyclists shouldn't be on the road.

There are a minority of daft cyclists that give the rest of us a bad name.

it's bad enough being abused by audi, sorry I meant car, drivers let alone motorcyclists. get some cameras. I've recently invested.

Please don't play into this idea of collective responsibility. Nobody blames all/random drivers for the actions of a terrible few, don't pay into it for cyclists.

It's not the bad cyclist's fault that a driver decides to take out their frustration on somebody completely random just because they are also riding a bike.

Anytime someone says that think cyclists should not be on the road just thank them for their support for segregated cycle lanes and check that they do in fact support cycling infrastructure when proposed and watch them struggle.

I was wondering what it was all about whilst driving.

Junctions have enough going on without this sort of bizarre token painting IMHO.

Maybe there's data to show that it helps?

I have no idea, it will have been tested in the TRL labs, but I've no idea if there's any real world data or not.

Witnessed a heartwarming interaction (in Barbados) between a male cyclist (front) and a female motorist (behind).

Cyclist: Fuck you
Motorist: You're a cunt
Cyclist: Fuck you
Motorist: Your mothers a cunt too

Motorist turns off.

I can help but wonder how much conversation took place before the tail end we overheard.
Was there a good mile of profanity that we missed?

Was looking to buy a bike off gumtree.. they then message me to say they’ve sold it to their neighbour. Okay fine. Now they’ve messaged me again to say their neighbour has changed their mind and I can contact them to buy it.. And I see the bikes been listed again on Gumtree at a slightly higher price. It seems relatively cheap for what it is.
???

Gumtree is probably dodgy. EBay is best for second hand imo.

Commuters: how bad do conditions have to be for you to leave the bike at home and risk your wellbeing and long-term health by getting on a plague bus?
I was half an hour late for work today cos they don’t grit the cycle lanes. There was no snow and the frost on the ground wasn’t that bad, but you can’t be sure if it’s covering black ice.
Would you go slow cautiously on these lanes, proceed normally or get off and push?

I think my confidence has taken a hit after recent accidents. It probably wouldn’t have worried me before

I've been really slack over this winter. Used to feel more confident but I've had too many accidents involving broken ribs once there's wet leaves on the ground. Also riding in Manchester centre in the dark once the clocks change feels almost suicidal.

Partly this might also be my unwillingness to go into work to do a job I can do at home while listening to music.

I need my exercise though and don’t like public transport as I like to be in control. And I’m tight. So will always cycle whatever the weather, and get off and push it if it’s too windy or if there’s ice or snow on the surfaces.

I cycled in today on roads like those but wished I hadn't. Not worth risking a broken hip imo.

doesn't look too bad though shame about the major road next to you. I have memories of falling off my bike in the snow in Richmond Park but other than being seen by a few deer was pretty low risk. Lower air pressure for a bit more grip and take it easy.

I think I’d probably try cycling - slowly - in those conditions on the basis that it would still be quicker than walking.

I used to cycle on all weathers but I dont take risks with ice any more. I've come off on ice and broke my wrist and a couple of years ago my Dad hit some black ice on his bike and broke his hip.

I wouldn't ride on paths like those - they look lethal!

I was wondering the same thing as I drove past a cyclist this mirninghon my way into work. wasn't too snowy in brum this morning but still snow on the ground. I wouldn't have fancied it.

I got caught out at work once when it snowed during the day, remember riding down the hill from Cross Gates in the ungritted bus lane and not being able to slow down at all, proper terrifying. I couldn’t merge with traffic on the gritted bit because it was going too fast. Cant quite remember how I got out of that one!

Just ordered one of these. £300 is the cost of a decent carbon fork and if I build it and hate it I should be able to flog it on eBay and cover my costs. Just occasionally being a shortarse has its advantages :D

Nice, what are you going to build it up with? :)

Boss refused to buy me half decent gloves 🧤 because my summer gloves aren’t worn out🤬.
So brought some army surplus blizzard mitts.
No more cold fingers for me 😂

when I bought my bike last year it came with tubeless tyres set up. I was a bit dubious as never having ridden with them before I wasn't sure how I'd deal with a puncture etc. Well after nearly 12 months without a puncture I encountered my first one yesterday. it shredded the side wall of the tyre and after waiting for over an hour to see if the sealant would seal up the hole I sacked them off and stuck a tube back in. there ends my flirtation with tubeless tyres. anyone care to convince me otherwise?

I'm a fan. Can run lower pressure, holes reseal etc.

But if you carry an inner tube as well, then you are no worse off that if you didn't have it

I have in the past had to remove a 2 inch screw embedded in the tyre (I knew from the noise of the head of it hitting the frame every revolution) . pulled it out, regassed and off I went.

Downsides
I little messy, and if you have a leak whilst riding you get a lovely spray of latex over everything
First time you forget to let air out of tyre before removing the core (and you will) you will have also forgotten to be wearing glasses, and will get an eyeful of gunk.
Valves need cleaning / de-gunking occasionally
Tyres tend to lose air slowly but inevitably, so you need to pump up before a journey
Gunk tends to dry out over time and needs replacing when you remember

If holes are particularly large, then you can use a plug to cover most eventualities.

YMMV

now I've popped the tyre off and broken the seal how would I go about resealing it?
