The Cure

Fucking Love Mr Smith for this. And Oasis should be fucking embarassed.

Last year, in an unusual move for an artist, Smith set prices for a US tour and then took Ticketmaster to task over the fees they had added, making the company refund punters.

“I was shocked by how much profit is made,” Smith says of modern ticketing. “I thought, ‘We don’t need to make all this money.’ My fights with the label have all been about how we can price things lower. The only reason you’d charge more for a gig is if you were worried that it was the last time you would be able to sell a T-shirt.

“But if you had the self-belief that you’re still going to be here in a year’s time, you’d want the show to be great so people come back. You don’t want to charge as much as the market will let you. If people save on the tickets, they buy beer or merch. There is goodwill, they will come back next time. It is a self-fulfilling good vibe and I don’t understand why more people don’t do it.

“It was easy to set ticket prices, but you need to be pig-headed. We didn’t allow dynamic pricing because it’s a scam that would disappear if every artist said, ‘I don’t want that!’ But most artists hide behind management. ‘Oh, we didn’t know,’ they say. They all know. If they say they do not, they’re either f***ing stupid or lying. It’s just driven by greed.”

Has anybody bought anything to get the code to possibly get tickets for Troxy?
I have. It is a bit of a pisstake but I really want to go. I probably would have bought the album anyway. And if I do get tickets it it’s still cheaper than similar sized bands even factoring the cost of the album in.

The only annoying thing is the fucking timing for the sale. I’m on the school run tomorrow and I need to leave the house 10 minutes after they go on sale. I can’t even be a few minutes late as it’s parents evening 😂

Have you seen the advice to download the app and create an account first? Can't believe I missed the deadline. Known about it for days. Idiot.

Smith has always come across as a proper person ..good on him
Saw the Cure only once in Newport, I dont even remember the year mid eighties.
Though I thouroughly drowned myself in early Cure and could take or leave the post pornography offerings I don't think the later stuff was actually him selling out, It became more easy listening I suppose but I get the vibe It was actually just him doing stuff he liked and wanted to do

Goth came a bit earlier than that, afaik. In the USA, Alice Cooper and The VU are seen as "goth" or at least some of the early output is.

Well, well

However, goth rock wouldn’t have evolved as it did without the trailblazing efforts of glam rock pioneers like Marc Bolan, David Bowie, and Iggy Pop. These artists, with their theatricality and defiance of societal expectations, laid the groundwork for goth’s darker aesthetics. Additionally, the proto-punk sounds of Lou Reed’s The Velvet Underground and Iggy Pop’s The Stooges, who boldly explored themes of human darkness and existential angst, were instrumental in paving the way for what would later be known as gothic rock.

It must also be noted that several other artists tapped into the domain years before it had even been thought of as anything akin to the goth aesthetic we know today. These include The Doors, with their stoned fantastical trips balanced on Jim Morrison’s lyrics and sparse music prone to explosive pangs, Alice Cooper, with his shock rock approach and generally macabre live shows, Black Sabbath with their occult-fascinated debut album, and Can with their own entirely subversive work.
