The Bicycle Racing Thread 2015

He could have two. Sky actually have three riders who are capable of winning a cobbled race, although Stannard looked a bit off the pace at E3. Problem is though that none of the three of them are likely to win from a sprint against many of the other contenders, so if any of them do it they will probably have to arrive solo.

They certainly do. Helluva lot of bad luck gets thrown about in that race though. If I was asked to place money on one team getting multiple riders in the front group, Sky wouldn't be top of my list. They wouldn't be bottom either, mind.

Anyway, there is some horrible, horrible weather today for Ghent-Wevelgem. Could well be worth watching.

Ninth place in gent wevelgem finished seven minutes down. Only about thirty finishers. Brutal.

Pinot messed up a bit in criterium international.

The crosswinds in G-W were insane. Never seen riders lean that hard into the wind and then get blown 6 feet the other way.

It was mental hey, they earned their race fee yesterday. Fair play to Geraint to get on the podium after being dumped into the ditch at speed!

Whatever department of the Kazakh regime is responsible for dishing out the "propaganda on wheels" budget won't be too happy.
On the flip side, having the reigning tour champion but not having to worry about the ABP might not be such a hardship. I imagine the UCI will be having words with ASO/RCS making that particular move.

Actually, now I think about it Torku had to sign up to the ABP of they wanted to keep taking part in the Tour of Turkey so there is precedent.

Wonder if nibali has a get out clause?

If it actually did happen, they wouldn't be eligible any World Tour race.

Yeah, I was thinking pro-conti when I posted. Good knows why, since the whole reason for posting was that it would be a step further than I was expecting. In my defend I was busy prepping for an exam :D.

In other news Thomas is 5.5 second favourite for Flanders. I backed him at 34.00 even though I hate, hate, hate sky. To cheer or not to cheer? Had him on a patent with bouhanni for MSR (19.00) and Demare for Roubaix (also 34.0 iirc).

Can't decide of that last one still looks a good bet or not.

Not great odds given the last French win was Guesdon in 97 and generally they are a bit shit in P-R...but it would be fantastic to have a home winner.

I tend to ignore stats of that ilk and focus purely on form.

He came in 12th last year in his first PR, having been (iirc) on the ground three times and punctured twice. He was the main guy driving the chasing group and still had enough left to outsprint the rest of the group in the velodrome.

I know I keep questioning whether last year's was a true run race, but that's a decent showing from a young guy riding the race for the first time. It's more what he's done since the start of the season which make me think he still has a way to go.

Rode the PR course yesterday - came off badly just after the second section and spent the whole day wincing (even more than normal). Arenburg was particular bonkers (though loved 'beasting it' up it, screaming like the end of a Rocky montage feeling rather doublehard, though similarly rather silly).

No effing idea how they think it's a good thing to have a pro race on it!

Live now on Eurosport now. The oft-mentioned-on-here Gougeard is in the break so the race is basically over.
