Thailand tips needed please

ach. might be a bit of a stretch in our timescale if we have to does significant trekking to get to somewhere proper decent. thanks- will look at the options

Penang or Langkawi might be a better bet if you're looking for somewhere nice, family-friendly, and easy to get to in that part of the world.

Penang is great but doesn't have the range of beaches you'd want for a sunny family holiday. Langkawi has got lots of great beaches and fantastic boat tours around the islands too. Relatively easy to get to from KL too.

As a side note. My dad's just returned from 8 years in Langkawi. Though it retains it's great beaches and excursions, the local governor has become increasingly antipathetic towards Western tourism. And is trying to court tourism from the gulf states. Bars are closing, alcohol is being rationed at supermarkets for Western tourists etc. Dad had had enough, but he's not the most tolerant of folk.

How about Railay? I flew into Phuket last August, and went to ao thang (?) which I didn't really love, but went on a day trip to railay and thought it was stunning.

thanks all - may look at malaysia

Malaysia is great, spent 6 weeks there and got all around the country. Not sure if it fits your specs for time though. The amazing beaches are not easy to get to, though Pangkor Island, which is where all the Malay Muslims go to holiday, is not that far from KL...probably. (I got there from Penang...that took 6 hours). Once at Pangkor there are even posher options if you're that way inclined or rich (I'm not). But by far the best island we went to off Malaysia was Perhentian Kecil. This would take too much getting to for a family though I think. It's right up in the north-east and a 30 minute speedboat trip once you are there (there are slower, more family friendly boats too).

That's Coral Beach, Pangkor Island.

That's the Perhentians.

Malaysia is an interesting place but you need time to get round.

Koh Jum is cool if you want a bit of peace and quiet. Surin and Similan islands are beautiful. And if you're diving (which you should) check out Richelieau Rock.

Thanks for the input all. Still thinking about this and whether we can do it in a 10 dayer including flights. I am used to doing serious milage with no sleep but not so sure that the family will be up for it.

We're wanting to do Thailand next November, starting off in Bangkok for a few nights then somewhere else for a week. First we thinking Pattaya but now Phuket or Krabi. We want things to do, but not crazy busy nightlife, beautiful beaches that aren't too busy, but also want to feel safe so not too remote, and we also want it to be fairly easy to get to from Bangkok and then back to London. Any ideas?

Of those choices I’d definitely choose krabi

Erm...first, you want to go to Thailand, not do Thailand.

Islands are much of a muchness to get to. Go to Koh Tao or Koh Phangan (west side, not party side).

Other than that, Pai in the north (mainland) is nice, as is Erawan national park in Kanchanaburi, 2 hours north of BK. Have a photo. I once spent Christmas day there.

How long are you going for? In November you need to check the weather in the Beach resorts as the dry season may not have started.

Pattaya ? eh? avoid, it's sex tourist capital. Krabi is good starting point and you can travel south along the many islands.
On the Eastern side of the country Ko Chang island near Cambodia is another place for starting off and the coach down isn't too long from Bangkok.

So we're flying off in a week, 3 nights in Bangkok then 7 nights in Phuket (Karon). We've got a boat trip booked and a spa day at a posh hotel :D yes it will be touristy but we're not adventurers and we've not been to that part of the world before so looking for an easy introduction.

Can you still buy tourist sims? Will it work in a 3 locked phone? Thailand isn't "feel at home" unfortunately.

Are you doing a boat trip around the marine-national park? We’re going in December and have pre-booked an afternoon washing elephants, but want to do a day of boats/beaches, we’re also near Karon, so any tips would be very gratefully received.

Don’t know about a local SIM. You can get the Three data passport for Thailand if you are so inclined (£5/day for all the data you can eat for PAYM customers). Though after using it last month for a couple of days and then having Three try to sting me for the best part of £400 in data I suggest you screengrab the confirmation that you have bought it each day, just in case (I beat them into giving me my money back; actually, I tell a lie, they credited me back even more money than they accused me of spending so my monthly bill barely came to £5).

PS Looks like I’ll be in Thailand in December too but using it as a jumping off place to somewhere else in SE Asia.

I don't know where the marine national park is but we're going to the Phi Phi Islands, booked with an Italian travel agency who runs the tours, no idea what their safety record is but they've got good tripadvisor reviews! All day tour to 6 islands with pick up & drop off at our hotel. I will let you know how it goes!

I have also found out 1. my phone is unlocked 2. best deal for data seems to be getting an AIS traveller sim, 600baht (about £15) for 6 gb of data for 2 weeks, which will be plenty for us, plus a bit of call credit. 3. there is an AIS store about 5 mins walk away from our hotel in Bangkok, in a big shopping centre! Which also has an M&S!

Ta, I think that's what we're looking for, James Bond island, monkey island, some snorkelling, that kind of stuff.

Hope you have a lovely holiday :)

I didn't find much very nice in Phuket but then I didn't explore very far. Ko Phi Phi is gorgeous though. Also went to Ko Tao which was also lovely but the other side of the peninsula.

Bangkok just now!

We went out last night to Ratchada night market. Taxi there took about half hour, then 20 mins back. We both had two rum & cokes at a bar, and a pad thai each, and shared a mango smoothie. The missus got a necklace chain and a nice watch she haggled a bit for.

Total spend, £31!!
