That vase.
i'm going there for a week working, but suspect it might be a bit quiet. anyone live there or recommend any sights?

going on monday, coming back next saturday.

i realise the weather is likely to be shit - there are some up helly a's happening on the friday though - d'you know if any of them are any cop other than lerwick's?

They'll soon show you the best pubs, cafes, etc.

If you're into ancient history there's loads of it up there. If you like wildlife/birds it would be worth taking binos. Don't expect to see trees though :)

eta any up hellyaa is good, but I like fire/flames :D

Aye, there's lots of ponies and puffins. Plenty of blowholes and stacks. It's great if you like birdwatching or geology. There are no trees to speak of, save for a small plantation of fir trees (all bent at a near 45 degree angle :D ) near Tingwall airstrip.

I've always wanted to go to Up Helly Aa. Have a good one. :)

E2A; almost everyone's surname in Shetland ends with "son".

I used to have a pal from shetland years ago, he took monstrous amounts of drugs and even when straight I couldnt work out what the fuck he was going on about half the time :D

Oh, I forgot: you can throw a stone from the Atlantic to the North Sea (well, Sullom Voe) at Mavis Grind, near Brae (which is like some wild west town). :D

Best thing about Shetland is the crazy accent.

And I'd recommend a visit to Muckle Flugga / Hermaness nature reserve for some good cliffs and a pretty impressive gannetry.

Aye, that's Brae...well, that's Shetland.:D

Did you go to Mavis Grind? Doesn't Sullom Voe oil terminal look really odd?

hmm... is that the thing with the flaming tower just over the water? we drove over mavis grind every day 'cause we were working up in north roe.

lovely place: i've rarely met friendlier locals - think i might go back for a holiday in the summer, as force 9 gales and driving rain does little to improve ones appreciation of an area...

That's it. Force 9 gales are fairly common in Shetland. It wasn't too bad when I was there: the sun was out and the wind was around 4 or 5. The crossing from Aberdeen was pretty heavy and I normally pride myself with having sea legs.

We told you they were nice :p :D
Glad you enjoyed it. I've never made it up there yet  I'm not a boat person at all.

The first black person I ever met was from Orkney. he's an author now. Luke Sutherland.

Planning our 2008 holidays at the moment and will be heading up to Orkney again, but this time we fancy taking another week and starting in Shetland - prob over the solstice.

So, a week or so in Shetland, where would be the bestplace to base ourselves?

We like pretty much everything about Orkney (walking, beaches, archeology, wildlfe etc) so would be looking for the same type of things in Shetland. Have downloaded the Shetland 2008 tourist brochure and have just been looking at our highlands and Islands rough guide - first thought is Central mainland, say around Hamnavoe, so we could get in any direction pretty easily (will have our car) and have seen some accomodation around there that looks nice, but we don't want to be near too many people.

All recommendations and suggestions welcome

Shetland quiet? Lerwick is the place to go if you are into drunken cowboy style brawls, the place is legendary for it. (Fishermen, farmers and oilrig workers out on the piss in the same place is a tad incendiary.)

Everytime I see something about the Shetlands I think of a lass at school who I used to scaive with so we could do everything but shag

we stayed in bray, which is pretty central (and the second largest settlement on the islands apparently - although it's still not too big). the food in the pub was excellent - fish caught in the bay that day, local lamb etc... the locals were shockingly friendly too.

you can get pretty much everywhere on the mainland within half an hour or so from there, we found.

But what a journey! It was the only time that I've ever felt seasick in my life!

I didn't find the ferry to be that cheap. I got a special deal because I went on a 'cruise', missus.

I was recently looking at the posibility of using that ferry to link into the Fareoese route & thence to Iceland, with the bike. Expensive & a long time in the boat but could be an interesting trip. :)

I'd love to go to the Faroes. Iceland too. I've got a weird fascination for these places. :)

Thanks, that's really helpful

I didn't know the crossing is that notorious! Am not a great traveller by boat although I do love them - may need to stock up on quells :(

you might be lucky, we had a millpond crossing when we went in May several years ago (for the folk festival)
