Fucking hell.

A teenager has been arrested for attempted murder after a six-year-old boy was “thrown from a tenth storey viewing platform" at the Tate Modern in London, police said.

The incident happened at about 2.30pm on Sunday in front of shocked witnesses. The child has been rushed to hospital by air ambulance.

A Met Police spokesman said they were called to reports of a young boy thrown from the tenth floor viewing platform of the gallery on Sunday at 2.40pm.

"The six year-old victim was found on a fifth floor roof," officers said in a statement.

"He was treated at the scene and taken to hospital by London’s Air Ambulance. The boy’s condition is critical; his family are being supported by police.
"A 17-year-old male had remained with members of the public on the tenth floor viewing platform. There is nothing to suggest that he is known to the victim. The teenager was arrested by police officers on suspicion of attempted murder and taken into police custody.

"A number of members of the public are assisting police with witness statements. Visitors to the gallery have been allowed to leave."

I've just seen this on the news. Unsurprisingly the child is in a serious condition.

That's pretty evil and also quite weird. I mean, I can sort of see why some attacks and murders are done - money, power, revenge, whatever - but not this one. Unless this 17 year old has been reading Gide, and it's his version of shoving a man out of a train.

Untreated mental illness? Combination of recreational drugs all going wrong?

I hope the guy who did it is white and British. I hate to think how some groups might try to exploit such a horrible event if he is not. :(

Speculation, obvs, but that must be some mentally ill 17 year old.

There is the known thing of heights / train platforms and stuff and thinking about pushing someone and it being a normal thing. But those railings are high and would need a lift and a chuck.

I hope the little one makes it. Anything else is irrelevant.

i sorta can see the point however hamfisted you trying to make but dude

too soon

What a shit thing to say.
Well, perhaps it is or perhaps it isn't. Just me pondering out loud and, yes, I did slightly worry lest someone become unhappy about it.

Which bit is the "shit thing to say", though?

It would be massively horrible if whoever did this was having a very bad episode and therefore not entirely responsible for their actions. (Well, it's massively horrible altogether for this child and the parents and we don't yet know whether the child will live.) Or he might be a completely evil bastard in general - we don't know.

If the bit you object to is my hoping that he is white and British, surely you can see the potential for racist groups to exploit this if the bloke is brown or Muslim or black or Polish or Romanian etc?

Oh well. You see, I didn't quite see the point in posting simply to say "Oh dear, that's bad". Had I been making a joke about it, yes, that would be very VERY far too soon. I don't retract what I said, and, yes, it might have been "hamfisted", just thinking out loud, but I am sorry that I offended people and I apologise for that.

You did not offend me but lets work out the fact before we start commenting on the situation...

The shard of glass in the heart reasoning of:

"I hope the guy who did it is white and British. I hate to think how some groups might try to exploit such a horrible event if he is not. :("

I suspect that Celyn 's comment was made in the light of the recent high-profile events in Germany, where two recent random killings (one an 8-year-old pushed under a train) were carried out by immigrants, an element of the story that is being used by right-wing groups to stir up further hatred.

It's all very grim.

Anyway, this story is tragic enough without that speculative diversion.

Not linking to the sources Mrs SI has read but apparently this dickhead was waiting for a while, watching people. When the incident happened security thought he was a relative and took him to the cafe until a witness came down and punched him, then they had to lock him in the toilets for his own safety. Apparently he's blamed social services
