Takeaway prices during UK lockdown

MrCurry

right after this urgent rest
I’ve seen in two different Facebook groups today people commenting on how their local takeaway outlets have been putting prices up during lockdown. Is this a thing you’ve noticed?

I would‘ve thought it’s a dangerous game to play as people have long memories and surely customers will not support business which took their chance to cash in on increased trading during the lockdown. Or maybe I’m wrong and orders are way down, hence the price increases?

Quite the reverse. I've been getting Uber Eats offers (20% and 50% off) at least once a week throughout lockdown and our favourite delivery place has had 50% off everything on the menu for the last couple of months.

I've used deliveroo a few times and its become fairly obvious that some places have a more expensive menu for deliveroo than when doing collection.

Can't say I've noticed anything out of the ordinary and like Spymaster have been getting spammed non-stop by ubereats with vouchers.

Supermarkets on the otherhand seem to have few offers which makes a big difference to me as I usually buy stuff if/when it's on offer.

Note - if at all possible please order direct from your local takeaway. Deliveroo, JustEat, Ubereats etc take a huge chunk off the top

Prices the same here at the two curry houses we like, had a Chinese too but eat from there rarely so dunno if they have upped the costs or not, don't think so as the menus seem the same as before. One of the curry houses (the one with the not quite as tasty grub) is doing free food to NHS workers, as is the kebabby, who have also not upped their prices.

I think my most common local takeaway definitely put the prices up a bit (and some sizes down a bit) not sure if it was during or before though. I don't begrudge them though.

Your screenshot doesn't say anything about takeaway outlets putting up prices. In fact, most tapas restaurants I know don't really do takeaway/delivery, so I wouldn't be surprised if £120 is just the normal restaurant price for four or five people.

A tapas place opened near me...I thought it would be nice to try it
3 asapargus on a plate for £5. I actually complained. Ordered a bunch of food and left hungry.
We left and ended up having to sort out some real food.
Tapas in the UK is a jib.

We do tapas weird in this country. Basically, a sit down meal. Not really how it works elsewhere.

A lot of food doesn't work as takeaway stuff as it doesn't travel well but is still popular. All of the Middle Eastern/Turkish grilled meat affairs, including kebabs, need to be eaten hot off the grill, not after being stuck on the back of a bike for 15 minutes. I actually think that pizza is pretty shite unless you live within 2 minutes of where it's being cooked but it's probably the most popular delivery food on the planet. I was always pretty certain only to get Indian or Chinese food delivered as reheating doesn't really fuck it up, but recently we've been getting pasta dishes from a nearby Italian, which are ace.

I find Indian reheats a lot better than Chinese.

Kebabs depend on what you order and how it is packaged. My kebab place delivers all the meat in foil containers, pitta/wrap in a foil bag. Then a separate bag with salad and sauces so they don't get sweaty.

One sent already in a pitta/wrap with sauce and salad is a waste of money.

Perhaps I'm overly fussy but considering that none of the staff where I am wear masks or gloves, I'm really put off getting takeaways. You can get all the ingredients and do a decent one yourself. All seems expensive to me after being away for so long, will take a while to get used to.

I have had far too many takeaways during lockdown. As my friend said, they are one of the last treats left you can have. But I've stopped now as too expensive.

Not had one...which is probably a personal best for the length of time in going without a takeaway ' bab or a curry..... . My local Chinese is now open.... Maybe in a week or two...

Saying that though... I've been making marinated chicken kebabs with skewers of chillies peppers and onions .. in my hot air, "fryer" dropped into some toasted lidls nans. and they have been turning out pretty good
