I lived in the marine Quarter, it was 30 seconds to the beach if I was slow down the stairs. Amazing city, great people, they even had a better system for playing pool than we did. How I got a view over the beach with no job is beyond me, it changed things tho. People there changed me. I fucked up of course, but no mistakes = no progress a lot of the time. I will never regret moving there or any of the time I spent there.How many city's can you casually walk from the centre and be on the beach in under 5 minutes?
Swansea has been crying out for investment and is now going through a big transformation after years or poor leadership and ridiculous planning from a narrowminded Welsh government
Swansea (Abertawe) was officially granted city status on 15th December 1969 at a ceremony in the Brangwyn Hall. It had been announced earlier in the year by Prince Charles, during a tour of Wales to celebrate his investiture year. Swansea's population in 2019 was 246,217, making it the second largest city in Wales and the twenty-fifth largest city in the United Kingdom.
A history of the development of Swansea;
It is popularly believed that the origins of Swansea date to it being established as a trading post by the Vikings in the sheltered waters of Swansea Bay, with access inland along the River Tawe. However, it was the Normans who established control of the area, with the building of Swansea Castle by Henry de Beaumont in 1107, as the caput of the lordship of Gower and the town of Swansea developed around it. Swansea was granted its first town charter around 1158 and a second by King John in 1215.
Swansea developed as the centre of the local fishing industry and from the early 18th century, Swansea's metallurgical industries became established due to its central position between the tin mines of Cornwall and Devon and the emerging industrial centres of the English Midlands. Industrial growth expanded into the 19th century and by the end of the 19th century, Swansea was producing 90% of the world's copper, almost all of the world's zinc and 75% of the world's tin plate, earning it the nickname Copperopolis. Industrialisation brought improved transport systems and urban growth. Swansea was made a borough with a mayor in 1835 and in 1852 North Dock was built followed by South Dock in 1859 and Prince of Wales Dock in 1881. Swansea's population also grew rapidly from around 1,000 in the 17th century to 6,831 in 1801, rising to 16,000 by 1841 and 134,000 in 1901.
The campaign for Swansea to achieve city status had begun in the early 19th Century, but the first official bid for city status was made in 1911. However, this was at a time when Swansea's industries were in decline and Cardiff eclipsed Swansea as Wales premier exporting dock, resulting in it gaining city status in 1905.
Swansea continued to suffer from the depression and economic hardships following World War I and was further devastated by the 3 day bombing campaign by the Luftwaffe of Nazi Germany on 19th –21st February 1941, referred to as the Swansea Blitz. Swansea's town centre became a blazing inferno as the Luftwaffe unleashed 1273 high explosive bombs and 56,000 incendiary devices, targeting the port, docks the oil refinery at Llandarcy, ironically the Three Night Blitz left the industrial area virtually unscathed but almost completely obliterated the town centre destroying 857 properties and damaging 11,000. 230 people were killed, 409 were injured.
However, Swansea survived and the resilience and determination of its people to regenerate the town resulted in new industries being established which along with it being promoted as a tourist centre helped to bring a degree of prosperity to the town. Swansea campaigned actively for city status throughout the 1960s, highlighting its cultural history and the sporting successes of its football and rugby teams, in particular. These efforts were finally recognised in 1969 and in 1982, Swansea obtained the further right to have a Lord Mayor.

Some nice healthy sentences handed out it's just a pity the SWP were hiding in the police station because it was too "dangerous" to go to the scene and a few local well known faces in the area decided to teach some of these thugs a lesson
I know a fair few SWP , lovely folk , don't agree with a lot of their politics but heh ho. Can't imagine them hiding in a police station that night tbf.Some nice healthy sentences handed out it's just a pity the SWP were hiding in the police station because it was too "dangerous" to go to the scene and a few local well known faces in the area decided to teach some of these thugs a lesson
Our local independent cinema that made news during the plague for refusing to ..well give a shit about anyone but themselves, is spiralling deeper and deeper into a far right cesspit. They've buddied up with Voice of Wales, GBnews, the nutters who want to ban sex ed in school, they show vax cause autism films, anti trans fear mongering posts and films. breathe They hosted that crazy covid denier nurse ..twice! And recently had David Icke...and now this. People are rightfully pissed off as the cinema owner is making fascists cuppas and offering them a seat (while claiming innocence of course) truth is she loves attention and doesn't give a shit how she gets it.
There's also another event on 7th May put on by stand up to racism Swansea- a counter demo to a lot of hate groups and a few unwitting conspiraloons that are meeting under the guise of protesting the 15min cities balls. Thanks to the cinema and a few other local venues, Swansea seems like a safe place for some of the worst hate groups in Wales. We've suffered due to gentrification, but here comes cuntification again and we have to show it the door.

Evening all. First time poster here. It's cool to see you have a dedicated Swansea thread (being a resident there myself). I hope everyone has had a good weekend.
"A policeman who punched an autistic man in the head seven times during an arrest has been jailed for 12 weeks.
Video evidence of the attack by PC Jack Williams, 27, in the back of a police van in Swansea in October 2022 was seen by Newport Magistrates Court ..."
