sounds like theres going to be a parliamentary challenge to 2/3rds of wages

Steve Rotheram, the mayor of Liverpool city region, said the government should be offering to pay 80% of peoples wages if their employment is locked down, and that it cannot “do lockdown on the cheap”. “If 80% was the right benchmark in March, nothing has changed. If it’s right then, it’s right now.”

quite right...hopefully this covid-era of compliance with the government is going to unravel...still needs pressure from the streets...

I'm of the opinion the Tories deliberately waited for furlough scheme to wind down so businesses would make redundancies before doing this new round of lockdown, so as to bring down the furlough costs. SAGE were advising for weeks to do a national lockdown, then lo and behold on November 1st, the day the previous scheme finishes they announce it, with a handy few day gap of uncovered pay between the old and new schemes, the effect of which is to add more people to the dole queue.

If thats too conspiratorial then at the very least they gave no shits about the fact this was going to happen -MPs arent in danger of losing their jobs - so they ignored it. Business organisations and unions had been warning of just this - on deaf ears.
