Both comprehensive schools I went to treated rugby like a niche sport to try for a few weeks at some point like volleyball or gymnastics. Nothing was ever going to replace football/cross country in winter and cricket/athletics in summer.

It still rankles that I missed out on the prestige of playing for the school football team (I was pretty much the best in the year and definitely the best left winger) because I'd already started playing for the scouts, who had matches the same day as the school and my parents wouldn't let me swap.

Rugby just looked painful.
