Southampton. Is it that bad

After all that Southampton is out as Mrs Tag wants to get out into the new forest.
I agreed with Mrs Tag.

Lymington might work. Sea, forest and restaurants.

You could take her to the Cider Pantry in Burley, very good cakes, scones and LEAF tea.

We had a really nice lunch at that pub on the quay I can’t remember the name of. Then a gorgeous ice cream and some fudge next door.

The town is cute.

The Chinese Restaurant we went to was called the Garden Restaurant on High Road, Food was really nice but parking was a bit of a pain (there is a small public car park hundred or so yards away) Pollyanna's parents are big fans of it and took us and their daughter there. Scarily when I googled it Google reminded me I had visited in August 2021

Cheers when we visit them again I might suggest that though Mrs Q will no doubt wonder where I got the info. Son Q and Pollyanna are off to see her parents again in a couple of weeks so I might suggest to them as well.

This has been recommended to me too, it’s amazing apparently.
Been there for birthdays - mine & child's - both times very busy with mainly Chinese families/students. Save up and book ahead; I've only had single dishes @ around £20 but really want to go for one of their set menus:

(Interior decor is OTT and awesome - check out pics online)

Missed this thread, and a little too late now, but here's my 2p worth.

Can Southampton really be as bad as everyone makes out?

No! Although I didn't know it had that reputation tbh.

I went to Uni there in the 80s & stayed for 17 years, and still live nearby. What I liked most about it when I first arrived were the many city centre parks, the Common, nearness to the New Forest, and the sea.

Stuff worth visiting, the Sea City museum, Tudor House Museum, a walk around the remaining city walls, the art gallery. Tudor House Museum is my favourite of those. Has a nice cafe by the garden you can go in without paying to go round the museum.

I like Southampton for various cultural stuff going on, several free festivals put on by the City Council in recent years, a few decent music venues, it has some nice areas, and is hilly in parts, not totally flat. Sailing nearby. Interesting history. Dunno, it's just always felt like home since I was 17, and I miss living there tbh.

Ok, I'm wandering round town waiting for my MOT to be done, so here's some pics to show its not a shithole. Just the civic centre and Watts Park, there's lots more and this is only one of the 4 or 5 adjacent city centre parks.

I carried on walking, took some more pics.

inside art gallery, new art/cultural quarter, Guildhall (music venue), front of civic centre (designed by Lutyens), Bargate, bog standard postwar pedestrianised high street, city walls (they're clearing up after the Boat Show)

chainsawjob have you ever been to a gig at the 1865? I think it used to be called something else. Just wondered what it’s like as I’m seeing The Lemonheads there in a couple of weeks.

My last gig in Southampton was The Lemonheads as well at the engine rooms. That was weird, next to a tyre place or something on the industrial estate. Evan Dando was having a fag in the garden which was two picnic benches out the front with a fence round it. The venue is also a roller disco.

We’ve got Suede at the guildhall next year which is much nicer. 😄

I love Engine Rooms! As it's on that estate, it's got less restrictions on sound so it's always loud af. Seen Ride, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Pigsx7 and others there and always had an ear splitting time :D

Southampton is good for gigs, but the last train home for me is 11.00, which means I have to drive which means no beer. Mrs mx comes sometimes, and we take it in turns to drive when she does, but it's less than brilliant.

This reminded me to check the train times. The train we wanted to get is a fucking bus so we’d have to get the 22.50. Hopefully the gig will be finished on time for a cab to the station.
