Sorry for another washing machine thread BUT....

Random Clever and Witty Strapline
....mine is fucked and it'll be ages before i can afford a new one.

It wont heat the water up, it gives me an error message which Google tells me means the heating element is fucked. So it'll only do cold washes. On that basis, d'ya think that it will still actually clean my clothes or will i be a smelly nelly until i can get a new one? I've been quoted £90+ to fix it by several repair men so may as well just get a a new one innit.

If you use detergent that says it'll do cold washes you should be OK (Aerial says it does cold washes). It might not work as well on filthy clothes, so muddy stuff might be a problem.

See, i dont get especially muddy, just the occasional bit when i walk my twatty dog.

It's more every day stuff like sweat etc.

Could you wash stuff by hand for things that won't go through a cold wash?

Washing by hand is a bastard though - you really need a mangle to do the job properly.

Use aerial or an own brand washing powder that'll do cold washes. Don't overload the machine and use a longer programme.

Avoid bright*nts like the plague - you end up paying fat chunks of interest.
Instead try for a British Heart Foundation furniture shop (the one in Whitehaven does white goods at remarkably good value).

See if you can find the required element on an internet auction site ... and then get someone to fit it.

You should definitely try using the cold wash and see how clean they get. You could also try soaking really soiled clothes in hot water (with bio detergent) and then doing a cold wash.
Improvise.
And when you get bored improvising the. You'll have to get it fixed or a new one.

Just checked the Aerial I've got in and it says it works in a cold wash (with an added 'brrr' blurb), but the iconography implies they mean down to 20°C. Not sure if this is just indicative, but worth giving it a spin on a completely cold wash to see what happens.

Thanks all.

Running pair jeans, couple shorts, couple t shirts through on longer cycle cold wash now to see how it goes.

I'll try n stay away from BrightHouse, it's just I don't do so well with the stress n they're seeming like an option is all.

Yes, I hadn't thought of charity shops. I'll have a wee butchers tomorrow.

Most detergents do fine on cold washes now, reckon you’ll not have any issues unless you get something really soiled.

I appreciate what you say about feeling stressed and going to bright house but I wonder how the stress levels will compare when you owe a shitty store that is openly out to screw as much money as possible from you. If you have a shit week and can’t pay, what are you gonna do? Not worth it when at least at the moment the machine is washing the clothes.

another thought, i think you've said you're somewhere in kent (not asking you to confirm / clarify) - found this organisation based in canterbury. if that's a bit of a trek from you (or if i've got it wrong and you're somewhere completely different) there may be something similar local.

Im in Kent yeah. Wee bit from Canterbury though! I did a Google n there's a similar store in Strood which is lot nearer.

What model is it?

It's a hotpoint Ultima.

And I'm stressing majorly again now over it. Ffs.

Yeah....i'm not sure i'd be able to repair it myself, without making myself sound excessivley odd, i'd get confused easily which leads into Hulk mode anger.
