Yes, we will be having them...despite loathing every aspect of the disgusting things - batter (urgh, shudder) with lemon and sugar mixed together - my mouth is shrivelling at the prospect. The ingrates and offspring line up on the kitchen sofa while I stand over a hot pan, pouring, tossing and transferring onto a conveyor belt of plates. I do get a brief surge of maternal pride.

Unfortunately no, they really can't, Greebo. I have a new and very non-stick frying pan which they are not getting near with their scrapey spatulas and pointy knives. Sadly, as my own cooking skills are parlous, I have managed to impart sod-all to any of the offspring apart from expert toast making...and as their standards are even lower than my own, I have been stuck in a 40year rut of providing fodder for ever-open but non-judgmental mouths.
