Silk Road founder gets life in prison

Encryption is great if you know who the fuck you're talking to and don't want Special Branch dipping your FB conversations. Bad for trusting random folk for planning murder it seems.
It was generally appreciated when I was a teenage cyberpunk that the best hacking technique for penetrating security was "social engineering" i.e. lying. It appears that this lesson hasn't really penetrated everywhere, and the FBI are obviously very good at it.

As if some top tier Hells Angel was on Silk Road at the suggestion of some blackmailer. When you deal on that level you have to be prepared to walk away from huge sums of cash unless you want to wake up to a brick wall every day.

A generation that's gotten used to ordering whatever they want off Internet , from clothes to pizzas to drugs . Naturally enough he assumed you could just order up an assassin as well ...the hidden hand of the free market just bitchslapped him . The capitalist swine .

Capitalism is a cunt. Especially when you are one but from the wrong side of the tracks.

there was apparently a silk road sister site for weapons of the shooty nature but it closed down to lack of interest. I suppose selling weapons to a largely US audience is a bit coals to Newcastle. Even if I thought it was secure enough and had wangled some secure address not linked to anyone etc I would not be buying guns off the internet. Not that I want one, but if I did. Not the silkroad.

The provos wasted a month in florida in the 70s trying to find the black market to buy guns till they realised there wasnt one:eek: you just walked into a gun shot and tooled up

Then there was the provie who did a tour of Euro gun markets with a 19 year old go-go dancer (who later became a Tory councillor).

Life in prison is a bit steep. Most murders get a lot less than that. I mean in the case of simple murder. I guess they figure this did as bad as initiating a genocide or at least going on a killing spree.

Well, when you're a threat to bankers and spooks they double the penalties.

Why is he a threat to either?

A lot of financial industry people, and George Osborne in particular, really like bitcoin. The spooks like darknet stuff because it conjures up an enemy that allows them to justify their own existence.

I think he's referring to Maria McGuire , who accompanied Daithi OConaill on an arms buying expedition to Amsterdam in the early 70s . I've never heard this 19 year old go go dancer malarkey before mind . Iirc she was a middle class radical student in her early 20s . And most likely a state agent .

She resurfaced in England recently as a Tory councillor .

Eta

The local tories found out about her assumed identity and kicked her out . There's gratitude for you .

I probably am referring to the case our colleague here alludes to. The go-go dancing thing was something I recalled from press coverage of her at the time of her expulsion from the Conservative and Unionist Party.

I don't believe she was ever a go go dancer . She was highly educated , multilingual with a background in European theatre . She did however have a penchant for hot pants , mini skirts , knee boots etc . It being the early 70s .
And if she was indeed an agent the entire time , which seems very likely , I'm quite sure she was encouraged to dress in this fashion by her handlers .

So you're saying that the bould O'Conaill was, like myself, a leg man?

I may have to alter my political perspectives accordingly.

He tried to hire a hitman to kill some people, didn't he? Fuck him. A nasty cunt.

silly FBI entrapment sting when he was already cracking wasnt it ?

edit : uhm, just read Wired piece, entrapment or not, DPR was pretty gung ho re: the old (what turned out to be bogus) hits...

guy was into bitcoin before it wa properly exploited

guy will have billions squirrelled away why he was released
Maybe this too but I was thinking it was more to curry favour with the lolberts.

Should he have been released? Absolutely, the sentence was bonkers as many in the States are. Should he have been released yet? Debatable. Should he have been pardoned? Again, bonkers.
