shucking oysters

Some people have a better immunity to norovirus, so you might be ok. I wouldn't risk it,which is a shame, becasue I love oysters.

We used to stay at this place on one of the Gulf Islands. At low tide, it was possible to go out with a bucket and gather lots of oysters on the beach. We used to take them home and eat them, with no ill effect.

There are times when it isn't safe to eat shellfish here, but at those times, the govt issues a Red Tide warning.

Not sure if things are equivalent in Britain.

Go to waitrose. I got my shucking knife there bout 10 years ago and the nice lady behind the counter showed me how to use it.Don't ask for 10 or 20 though. You'll look like a bellend when you're told they come in dozens or half dozens. I did.

It's pretty easy, but do get a shucking knife. You don't need an oven glove, just be careful with the blade as you would be with any knife. slip the blade inbetween the shells at the rounder end, wiggle it a bit and give it a twist.

Sometimes they're a bit harder than at others, but the dire warnings on this thread are a bit over the top.

I dunno this is just my local fish stand and all it says is "80p each" so I think you can buy whatever quantity you want.

Not if you are me. H&S warnings are always important for me. Although, thinking about it, I've yet to have an oyster related accident.

. . . One turned out to be conjoined twins! . . .

Are you sure?

I never knew LA even had oysters. The other L:A (Louisiana) is famous for them... The Tidewater, Virginia varieties are world famous, the Chincoteagues are particularly prized...

I love oysters but can't afford them in the UK. Cheapest I could find where £2 each. In Spain I got them for €1 each.

Pound each at wright brothers - but I suspect you are meant to buy a glass of booze

I don't partake but growing up they features heavily on Christmas and New Year menu. Nobody ever got hurt, they used a tea towel to make sure the oyster didn't slip and used oyster knives. There's a knack.

We saw this at a fair though for people who like a gadget and don't trust their gripping hand to remain away from the blade. Seemed pricy but probably worth it if you are a novice/ accident prone / have to do loads of them.
