Ship porn

That seems a rather, er, unusual name for any boat/ ship, let alone a warship. HMS Vanguard, Valiant, Dauntless… and here we have HMS Duncan.

Must send shivers down the spines of enemy combatants. ‘All hands, prepare for the worst: here comes HMS Duncan’ :D

the RN usually comes up with fabulous names for warships. A favorite of mine HMS Ambush. I guess RN was following USN custom of naming destroyers after people. Rather mundane, I agree…

I’d love to know who the Duncan this ship is named after might. Undoubtedly a hard bloke not to mess with.

Anson and Howe never felt particularly threatening, either. But solid history behind them. Just not keen on people's names, bar Nelson. Anyone who sails on a warship should know who Nelson is.

It's to lull them into a false sense of security. "Oh, it's only HMS Duncan and HMS Nigel. We'll be fiiiiine"

just keep them away from bridges

The 18 mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and the Hampton roads Bridge Tunnel are right in her path!

Gosh that's awful!
I didn't know that sort of thing could happen :(
I’ve posted this before on the boards somewhere; there’s an absolutely fascinating story (and a much happier one as far as the welfare of the stranded sailors goes) regarding what happened to the many ships that were on the Suez Canal when the Six Day War broke out. Basically it involved dozens of ships from multiple countries, and the stranded sailors formed a community that evolved even to issuing their own stamps, having Olympic Game competitions, and more. The two links below are a great read:
