Ship porn

Madonna is giving a free concert on the beach tomorrow. To prepare myself, I was watching some old videos of hers. Papa don’t Preach (1986), towards the end, has a ship in the background. I assume it’s New Jersey. It looks like the old ATLANTIC STAR of ACL/Cunard Ellerman lines. I crossed the Atlantic on that ship a couple of times in 1986. I LOVE MADONNA! (to be honest, it could be the SAGA or the SONG). IMG_2459.jpeg

Speaking of New Jersey

I know nothing about boats - I don't know anyone who knows anything about boats - and this was the only thread I could find about boats. We have a housing crisis here and I'm thinking of buying a boat to go live on. Madness I know but... Is this overpriced. It's AUD so half the cost £25 K

where are you?
things to look for are probably a diesel heater for when the ice is forming, a decent sewage holding tank and pump for discharge. Storage space and somewhere where you can stand up straight to get dressed.

I'm in Queensland, it doesn't get cold enough for ice. I think all of those had an 8 foot height. So I need to check the sewage holding tank and discharge - thank you :)

pseudonarcissus thank you, so there's checks and balances like a mot ( road worthy) for a car. So finding a boat that's being sold with one would help - as long as it's not fake. Think I'll go and have a wander down to the marina and ask questions :)

I don’t think there are any equivalents to an MOT, even in Oz.

Just like an old house, a good survey would be well worth the money, preferably with the boat out of the water. Wood rots, steel rusts, and fibreglass is ummaintainable. Also, find a specialist to look at the gas installation, there are a lot of carbon monoxide deaths on boats so fit an alarm. (Maybe more of a cold weather thing, but boats are not very well ventilated.

If it’s hot and you need ac, you will need shore power. There are 12V fridges, but I’m not sure I would want to live with one.

As someone mentioned earlier, finding a residential mooring might be the starting point.

That looks remarkably like "The Matthew" [replica of John Cabot's ship], although I haven't seen her anywhere other than in the Floating Harbour - she was berthed not far from the SS Great Britain ...
Spanish Galleon the Andalusia I think, on its way to Gloucester tall ship festival

I seriously have no idea.. but could learn?

You are starting your search in the wrong place, you need to find a mooring that will let you live aboard then buy a boat that works with that mooring. I don't about QLD but live aboard is very difficult in WA and you're only allowed six consecutive days at almost all moorings administered by the Department of Transport. It might be possible at (very expensive) private marinas.

You want to allow $1,000/month for maintenance and maybe $500/month for insurance. Also remember that shore power is very expensive compared to domestic electricity. It's not a cheap way to live. Or a particularly pleasant way to live unless you've got a boat like the Azzam.
