Self-indulgent pet thread

Bracken's still with us thankfully.

He hasn't recovered fully - he is still pretty unsteady on his legs - but his eyes are steady and his head's no longer tilted to one side. Most important of all there's still lots of tail wagging at appropriate times.

But we know he's on an inevitable downward slope now so it's a balance of quality vs. quantity of life.

Dogs. They race through life so quickly :(

Liked for Bracken still being here; not for the downward spiral.

Here's a picture of Fluffy basking under his heat lamp.

George has been amazing with her even though he looks at me like 'wtf have you brought into my life' sometimes.

nonamesunbathesmall.jpg No Name, my 11 year old bunny, has been very poorly this week - he had to have his eye amputated because of an abscess! I'm now giving him daily painkillers and antibiotics, and after a couple of days of looking very sorry for himself (really heartbreaking seeing him like that), he seems to be recovering quite well.

Here's a pic of him a few days before the veterinary emergency, sunbathing under my bay window

Thanks petee, Puddy_Tat and twentythreedom.

Unfortunately i had to have No Name put down on Thursday. While his face healed well from the operation, and he initially seemed quite well, it soon became apparent that as they hadn't been able to remove the infected tooth that infection and pain still remained, and either from the pain or the after-effects of anesthetic his guts weren't working properly. I was having to give him loads of medicines which he really didn't enjoy (and daily medicine was going to be a long term thing), we were back and forward to the vets all the time, which he also hated, he wasn't eating hay or pellets, only leafy greens, small amounts of grass, and tiny amounts of special wet food, and he was losing weight rapidly, and was becoming urine incontinent. Then it became apparent that he was still in lots of pain and his guts were stopping again even with all the meds, and it seemed like the kindest thing to do was to put him out of his suffering.

He had a long and interesting life for a rabbit - he was found as a stray in a park with another male rabbit (Mouse) who he was in a bonded pair with (and sometimes a bit more than affectionate with - especially before they both got neutered). When we took them on they had the run of our back yard, with a soil bed to dig, and a big hutch, but for a while they mostly hung out underneath my ex partner's son's disused motorbike. Mouse died very suddenly a year or so ago, No Name really grieved for his partner, and we moved him mostly indoors because he started to need more care and company. Then when i moved to my flat, he moved with me and i've spent the last few months making rabbit obstacle courses in my hallway and having him hop round my living room (with the occasional binkie), sunbathe under the bay window, or hide under my sofa, occasionally sniffing my ankles or making a dash somewhere, while i watch tv, as well as the usual daily hugs and brushing. I'm missing him terribly tbh, but glad he had a fairly long life.
