Self-indulgent pet thread

hope it goes better than this...

:p
I think it's likely to be other way round. Breeze is about 1/3 bigger than Charlie, and far more Alpha. Like her, he's another who isn't particularly "getting on" with his pack. I hope they'll find some affinity, or at least not kill each other! :) Careful management ahead . . .

OMG CRI is putting together a menagerie to take over the world by cute.
If not, however ... professional assistance may be required (I do hope it isn't and that everyone gets on sweetly)

I can't wait to see a pic of Breeze looking even more unimpressed than usual :)

Charlie is beautiful

Wow, thanks for all the lovely wishes. Am now trying to learn everything I possibly can about dogs, as it's been a loooooooong time since I had one of my own and to be fair, my parents really looked after her. Advice on nutrition, health, all that stuff will have changed massively, too. Quite keen to try agility training - Paps are supposed to be ace at that (and I could do with the exercise myself!) :)

Not sure where to put this. Is it appropriate to keep a dog in the garden in a purpose built run sort of kennel thing?

The bonfire neighbour who filled my garden with smoke the other week has built a dog kennel at the end of his garden. Not got a look at the dog itself yet but the bowl is there and I could hear doggie last night. It doesn't look like he'd mistreat it given he's built an entire kennel for it. Photo in a bit. It just concerns me that you'd have a dog anywhere other than in the house.

And I say kennel/run as it's got wiring on the front like a chicken coop thing rather than a Snoopy style kennel.

That's not warm enough in the winter is it? Unless it's having pups and they think it needs space?

We've got family who own a small-holding and all their dogs live outside all year round.
They're probably horrified that our dogs sleep in the bedroom with us :D
I think it depends very much on what the dogs are used to.

Working dogs are often kept outside but they get stimulation from the fact that they're working. It doesn't seem ideal to keep a pet dog outdoors, they're social creatures and like being around their people

If that's you you look like a hipster Blofeld. :)

Hahahahahah! No it's not me. That's a man from the television. His name is 'Jackson Galaxy' and he has the CV-busting job description of "musician by night, cat behaviourist by day". He is based in Los Angeles (you can just tell) and is the star/host/sergeant of a TV series called MY CAT FROM HELL where he saves batty or neglectful hoomins and dysfunctional cats from each other. He usually manages to tame even the most savage felines but can't help having to work with pepople who are often completely bonkers. (The therapy usually involves some combination of extra playtime / catnip / more litter trays / blocking off hiding areas.)

I don't know if that is the dog which lives in the new kennel affair but it's a big 'un in that garden. Not sure the photo is that clear and no idea if anyone is home. I just need to get opinions cos my cats are quite often across that way.

Lent out the window just and squeaked as if to call the cats in. Huge rottie type dog started barking and bouncing about in the kennel. Poor bugger. I'd say almost certainly a super guard dog. Is that okay or do people need to know?

I don't think it's illegal although in very hot/cold weather I'd be worried about the dog.

There's a house near me where the dog is kept out a lot, all night sometimes as I can hear it barking.

I'd like to work out where it is in case it's out there in the middle of winter.

I know you can get some amazing kennels that are really well insulated and even heated but this one doesn't seem very fancy.

When we picked our dog up from the breeder, his parents were outside in runs. Apparently the mum was kept in the house until they weaned the puppies. I wanted to go back and bust them out. :(

If a dog has access to food, water, and shelter, then it's not illegal.

It's not ideal mind you, I can't imagine having a pet that would probably prefer to be indoors and just sticking it outdoors, sounds like a wasted opportunity to have a good loyal friend. :(

But it's not considered abuse in a legal sense to keep a dog in that way.

EDIT: I don't know how it goes with dogs, but it's not unusual to keep stud cats in outdoor housing/runs because of spraying and risk of unplanned litters, but an ethical breeder will usually retire studs whilst still young (between 1-3 years old) so they get a good long life as a pampered housecat, I have an ex-stud who was retired well before he was 2 years old, he dipped his wick a couple of times then was neutered and has lived with me since, lovely cat and a wonderful pet.

Actually my Jakey is the father of one of the first ever fawn point Siameses to be awarded Champion by the GCCF. (Although mostly due to timing, his daughter was just the right age to be shown when the GCCF properly accepted the colour for competing in shows)!

Proud Grandparent! :)

Well, there's a new furball in the house! He's a chirpy, cheeky chappy who seems to want cuddles ALL the time.

Breeze isn't entirely thrilled about the situation. I suspect she thinks he's a cat unfortunately. Relationship-building may take some time. (Griff and Malcolm are thankfully non-plussed. He's not much bigger than they are!)

I'm just hurt that you didn't consult with me about this first. :(
