Self-indulgent pet thread

Me and my girlfriend have bought some piggies together.

This is Meep and Buffy

They are only 3 months old and really skittish just now. Meep (the white one) is braver of the two but they both hide a lot.

I'm sure they will, Griff is a nice bit of rough for them.

I did wonder, I made the mistake of getting a couple of guineas pigs once, one male and one female, it didn't take long before they multiplied.

I don't know if they can cope with the excitement of seeing Griff just yet. I'll let them settle in first.

I just fed them some apple and banana, I can hear them chomping but they're still hiding.

Welcome Meep and Buffy! :)

It looks like Meep is Himalayan - coloured points and pink eyes? And Buffy maybe a bit of rex - slightly wiry fur? They are absolutely GORGEOUS and I'm deeply jealous.

Either Griff or Mal would be like dirty old men. They're nearly 5 and 4 you know! :)

Keep those photos coming!

Yeah we thought Meep is Himalayan. We couldn't find any description in the book that matches buffy though. She does have wiry hair so that must be it! Thanks for solving that mystery, I will let the gf know (Buffy is HER piggy, and meep is MINE.. but really they are both of ours)

I had better keep my ladies away from being corrupted then.

Any idea how long till they'll stop shitting themselves when I go near the cage? I feel like this at the moment

Ooh, happy to help with the breed ID! :)

To be honest, Malcolm is STILL like that when you go to pick him up from the cage, unless you catch him in the right mood, so the answer is "time will tell" and "it depends on the pig." Griff, on the other hand, would let anyone pick him up and has been like that since I've had him. He was 3 weeks when I got him, so handled very young. Mal was turned over to the rescue when he was about 3 weeks old with a severe fungal infection, so his early experiences of being handled weren't great. I got him after it had healed about 4 weeks later. He's okay once you've got him, and if you're on the floor with him, he'll come up to you. Lots of patience and lots of handling should help.

Thanks dude. Once I've picked them up they are ok, but I think they're still nervous. The guy in the shop said give them a few days to settle in, so I'm not handling them much. I just wish I could watch their furry cuteness in the cage without them hiding.

Ah bless, Meep's such a cutie! It's okay to take out the main "bolt hole" for a wee while while you sit talking to them to get used to you more, but make sure they've got it back after a bit. Even when they get more used to you both, they'll still want a place to hide in. They never quite accept that there aren't raptors in indoors! :)

Yeah, I only take it away for a little while, just when I want to let them out the cage. They are getting much better when they're out the cage now. Today I had them eating out my hands - their love for green peppers overcame any fears they may have! They seem quite relaxed being handled but as soon as they're back in the cage they hide in the hay dispenser again lol.

When I'm away from the cage I can hear them having a rare old time. I put loads of different fruit and veg in today and it caused some excitement.

:)

the mogs i used to live with seemed far more enthusiastic about their after-breakfast nap when i had to go out to work than when i didn't...
"after breakfast nap" makes it sound like it is a map of finite timescale, and we all know that's not true.:D

They've grown into 2 utterly adorable dogs. They love their cuddles and are for the most part really well behaved. We've stumbled across a dachshund play/walkies group who meet on a semi regular basis here in Geelong which is utterly hilarious. Walking 30+ sausages around the park always turns heads.

I've turned into a mad dog person.

When I'm feeling bad now I go into the lounge, lie on the couch and they come up and fall asleep on me. They would stay there forever as would I if I didn't have to do boring grown up things. I'm so glad we got them. :)

I squealed like a guinea pig at those adorable two! Was at a market today where there were LOTS of gorgeous doggies (including a pair of miniature dachshunds - one short and one long haired. I seriously wanted to kidnap one. I keep thinking Breeze needs a companion! :)

I'd love to see that sausage dog parade! :)

New camera - early birthday present, so trying to figure out how to work the thing. These were the other day, when I hadn't yet looked at the instruction book, but still not too bad. Pigs after a shower and Breeze looking stoical in the face of too much camera-in-the-face. Prepare for more! :D
