Self-indulgent pet thread

My Gecko, Smaug. Managed to snap a pic early this morning whilst he was somewhat active. Sorry the pic is on it's side for some reason, doesn't do that on mobile devices. He's 3 years old now

Smaug looks really cute! Awesome name too.

(I hope Daisy got let in, it is a bit chilly out)
He's adorable but unfortunately he's the grumpiest reptile I've ever owned. Absolutely hates being handled at all, eats only the most expensive fruit powder mixes, always leaves his crickets, seems to hold all his excrement inside him until it's tank cleaning day where he waits just until I'm finished before he soils it all again, hates you looking at him, loud at night AND he bites me. But... I love him for it, it's the closest to myself I've found in a pet before :D

If I recall correctly, guinea pigs have to have a diet rich in lots of veg, because they cannot break down certain foods into the vitamins and minerals they need to stay healthy (I think it is that they have a high need for vitamin C from fresh veg, because their metabolism cannot break down other food to provide the same benefit.) Some pets can live on pelleted food bought from a pet shop (although it must be really dull and is not ideal), but piggies need their fresh veg and leaves and should always have a good supply of leafy greens and other veg. :)

Yes, cavies, like humans, can't metabolise their own Vitamin C'. It's added to alot of dry guinea foods, but it can degrade after a while, so always best to make sure they have fresh veg every day. For anyone interested, there's some good info on it here, including which veg contain the most Vitamin C. http://www.guinealynx.info/diet.html This is one of the many reasons you should never keep guinea pigs and rabbits together - different diets (that amount of veg would give a bun permanent runs.)

Where did you get your multi coloured mats from please if you don't mind me asking? (And that is a particularly fetching bottom shot!)

£20 each at Argos http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1199721.htm :D After she destroyed the previous rugs, decided wasn't worth investing much in new ones, at least for now.

I like the fact there are 4, not 1 but 4 cat beds around the house, none of which have been used for years..... But the cat hasn't left the stupid shoebox since Friday!

I went through the process a few times

cat decides he likes sleeping somewhere

place cat bed there to keep the cat hairs off whatever it is

cat decides he likes sleeping somewhere else

repeat...

Most on this thread probably know that I am yearning for new cats; bear that in mind when reading the below ...

Son had to wash the fluffy microphone covers (you know, the bunny ones for outside recording) yesterday; they were lying next to me to dry by the radiator. I was running my hands over one to feel how dry it was and to fluff up the top ... and realised I was petting it! :D

I might post a photograph of them for oohs and aaaahhhs.
