Scottish government wants drug possession to be legal

The Scottish government has called for the decriminalisation of all drugs for personal supply.
Scottish ministers want the UK government to change reserved laws to allow people found in possession of drugs to be "treated and supported rather than criminalised and excluded".

watch for the government to slap it down because of all the lovely profit that can be made with private prison's

I don't suppose anyone actually goes to prison in the UK for simple possession now, unless they're trying to get you for other things and they all fall through. I may be talking through my hat, though, so tell me if I'm wrong.

Yes. But this is a tiny step, and will cause a great deal of outrage. It seems stupid to me -- if they're not willing to come out for a sensible drugs policy, because the DM et al. would have a field day, why bring up something that will still give them fuel, but not really do very much?

Mind you, most of what governments do with regard to drugs policy is pretty stupid.

Probably not, but it's not great to have on your record when applying for jobs.

I think (or at least hope) that even the average tory voter doesn't look at the US prison system and think we should do that here.

You're suggesting that they would throw loads of public money at public services so that their "mates" or whatever can profit from providing those services as private contractors. I don't notice them throwing loads of money at bus services or social care services, say.

I wonder if anyone has done the maths. If all recreational drug users were put in prison -- and for that matter everyone else who has broken any law, given that many far more antisocial criminals aren't jailed for the first or even 10th offence -- how many people would be taken out of the workforce, and how would we get the staff for all the extra prisons without taking another chunk out of it?

Most drug people don't work. They steal things and rob law abiding citrizens.
Factually incorrect.
Approximately 1 in 11 adults aged 16 to 59 years (9.2%; approximately 3 million adults) and approximately 1 in 5 adults aged 16 to 24 years (18.6%; approximately 1.1 million adults) reported last year drug use in the year ending June 2022; there was no change compared with the year ending March 2020.

The UK unemployment rate was estimated at 3.8%, 0.1 percentage points higher than the previous quarter and 0.2 percentage points below pre-pandemic levels.

So, if 9.2% of people take drugs, but only 3.8% are unemployed, then most 'drug people' do, in fact, work.

The others might be children and retired people.

Also, do students take drugs?
Yes, children and retired people might take drugs and rob people.

Students take drugs, and they might also rob people.

Do you think enough of either cohort do enough robbing and stealing to make Spy's ridiculous claim true?
