Proposal to ban private cars from public roads

Some tips on good pubs and other places worthy of a visit in that area would certainly be appreciated as it seems likely I will be around that way now and again over the coming months.

And kabbes I will let you know if meeting for a pub lunch seems like an option at some point.

We need a date. Then a public holiday. Then some dreadful plates. Or if not, at least some interesting histograms.

A commemorative plate with a picture of kabbes and I eating lunch in a surrey pub. Who wouldn't buy one of those at just £59.99 with special gift presentation box included (+£10.99 for postage)?

Make public transport more accessible, frequent, and cheaper, so that people find it easy to use.
At the moment, bus users who are going to appoiintments, work, college etc either have to arrive early and hang around until their appointment time is due, leave early missing important stuff, or leave at the right time but hang around in a bus stop for a long time, well before the bus is due.

I dont use a car, and dont drive, and I resent having to get out of the way of cars. There are too many on the road, and yes, car owners are too dependant on their cars, but, until public transport becomes more accessible, cheaper and more frequent, car owners will continue to depend on thier cars.

Teuchter -- I realised today that I was mixing up the Black Horse, which is in Gomshall about a mile away, and the Abinger Arms. Sorry about that.

Will your future advice be similarly shoddy? I'm still recovering from the christmas lights scandal. Being sent to incorrect pubs could push me over the edge.

It's OK, neither are pubs I would have recommended in any case. When it comes to pubs I recommend, I know my pubs.

. . . . and I resent having to get out of the way of cars. . . .

You don't. There's no law that says cars have priority on highways. Motorways yes, but not roads. More of us should walk on the roads (especially when the pavements aren't gritted).

Don't forget conveniece.

Many people are very happy to pay pretty much any premium just to be able to travel from wherever they want (rather than from a fixed point nowhere near where I want to travel from), to wherever they want to, door-to-door (rather than to somewhere with no door, not remotely near where I want to arrive). Oh, and can I travel whenever it's convenient for me?

Taxis are OK but they don't score too highly on the other major factor - comfort.

Which is more appealing? - (a) a nicely upholstered seat in an environment with climate control and a choice of entertainment options, all delivered with 14 speaker surround sound or (b) a 1 in 5 chance of a seat on which god knows what has already been dribbled, spilled and excreted, probably within nasal assault range of somone who clearly uses their underwear instead of Andrex?

No contest!

I like public transport because I can have a snooze. And perv.

Have you had Sunday lunch at the Royal Oak in Holmbury lately? It seems to have changed hands, the Kings Head doesn't allow kids in the bar or dogs in the dining area, so we had to go to the Oak yesterday. And my, the most delicious roast beef I have ever had in all my puff. Even the brat cleaned her plate and that is unheard of.

eta, this is in Transport isn't it? So should you think of driving up to the top of Holmbury Hill when its covered in snow, you may wish to reconsider, fun it ain't.

I had to drive roads there and thereabouts on Thursday -- drove over Abinger Common, where I amusingly saw a BMW X5 slipping backwards down the hill.

However: bery, very lightweight Panda 4x4 + snow chains = I managed to even go up the hill that the snowplough Landrover was stuck on. They gave me a little cheer as I went past.

Not been to the Royal Oak since spring. Sounds like I'm going to have to try it again.

The Volunteer has changed hands too. But I don't think I'd bother if I were you, for all that they seem to be lovely people.

Always a pleasure to see a BMW suffering. Coming down from the top of the hill and Land Rover was coming up, I pressed the brakes and nothing happened!

The Volunteer did look inviting in its dell with smoke pouring from the chimney, but the Royal Oak was a very pleasant surprise.
