Prince of Wales pub, Coldharbour Lane Brixton closes (2011)

It's been strange ever since Arthur baker waltzed into brixton thinking he'd start a chain of Harlem bars throughout the country. I remember much bragging at the time.

This did seem to be the death knell, but it's always had a kind of corporate vibe to it imo.

Although the Beehive being part of a chain doesn't seem to have been a problem...

Incidentally, does anyone remember when the place did gigs in the eighties? I saw a string of Goth bands there, including Sex Gang Children, The Knives, and Sunglasses After Dark. The gig bit was where KFC is now, but you got to it via the pub. A real spit and sawdust place. No corporate vibe in them days.

Must have been after it stopped being a gay pub

Well, in recent years: it closes. It reopens, promising to be a great hip new destination. It closes. It reopens. A club open upstairs. It closes. It reopens. It closes. It reopens. Etc.

It's the new business cycle of capitalism v3.0 (post Great Crash patch update: no logic is required for any business proposition any more since it's all built on lies and we're all doomed anyway.)

Maybe it's only open to private parties? :hmm:

Were they serving beers on tap or only bottles like last week? Excuse the pun, but it sure seems a rum way to run a business.

Noticed it was open at 11am this morning when we were on our way to get some vegan cupcakes.

AFAIK the owner has bought lease to Fridge which caused a cashflow hiccup but all sorted now.

There's another place that manages to regularly shoot itself in the foot with uncanny ease.

Well - let's hope it is in for a lucky streak. I hear that it will be a live music venue. Not sure how its capacity compares with the Academy - or indeed whether that is the type of gig it is after.

The Fridge used to be a great venue. I've been to some top nights there (and headlined there once too!), but it's spent the last few years spectacularly under-performing.

Don't worry - I'm sure the two aren't closely related. :D

Last nights I went to at the Fridge were Escape to Samsara, Top Cats and lastly some very random theatre production starring David Soul and Huggy Bear, along the lines of Death of a Salesman.

This could be good news. In terms of size it's a Kentish Town Forum size venue isn't it? About 1,000 capacity?

The buildings are almost exactly the same size in plan, so yes I would guess so.

Still, a great addition to Brixton in terms of the 'size' of the bands that could fill it.

Damn straight. It used to be a great venue for breakthrough bands who weren't big enough for the Academy, but too big for any other venue in Brixton.
