Posting this thread bc the other one's still aimed some way off to the side of Rathband's death.

Posted from the Moat vs Bird thread, without some of the preceding (relevant) comments bc bringing them across'd be too much cut n pasting.

Every time I heard him on r4, he was seething with anger, self-pity and pain. Interviews I kinda walked away from thinking "crikey, there's someone it'd be difficult to have a chat with down the pub (or alternative place of socialisation)."

Or, more often, just kinda thinking "whoaaa.... Ouch. There's someone who just isn't ok."

Very understandable, but... he clearly wasn't able to adjust to, accept or get over what'd happened in any way, or to any extent.

E2a: IMU the breakdown with his wife was, in least at part, violent. I know he had real difficulties changing to someone who wasn't a "man" in the sense of a strong, traditional provider.

Yes.. very sad. I heard an old clip of him talking on R5 this morning, saying that he couldn't see how he could even get thru the next 12 months, being blind... seemed an eloquent and decent man from what i could hear.

Poor guy. I wonder how much support he was actually getting? He started a charity to help servicepeople injured in the line of duty so presumably there wasn't much help/support before that?

He was a victim of Moat when he was blinded. However his own personality flaws caused him to fail to come to terms with the hand he was dealt, a hand that many other people are also dealt and adapt to without the seething anger displayed by this poor soul.

True, but everyone reacts differently to such a trauma. Some people get on with it and cope, some people don't. I'd hardly call it a personality flaw because he didn't cope

He may not have died of the injuries caused by Moat but he almost certainly died as a result of his actions. Ergo, he is very definitely a victim of Moat.

Just to echo what Minnie said, that is a massively judgemental statement. All of us have things we could cope with and things we could not, and none of us know what those things are until and unless we are faced with them.

I'd think that with the high-profile of the whole thing he'd have had every opportunity for counselling. This outcome seems doubly odd.

True, but counselling doesn't work for everyone, and not everyone wants counselling whether they need it or not. (I have no idea whether he had counselling)
