Pavement - what's the appeal?

i think that was not on the night i went unfortunately...anyway i finally learnt my lesson after that gig, which was that even if the band play excellently and play every song i could hope for then i will STILL never enjoy reunion shows.
well i would go to the jesus lizard one still probably.

So glad I saw JL almost 20 years ago....

yes i saw them at the time! But, i did hear that there reunion shows a few years ago were great. mind you there are always people who will say things are great. I'd go to a jesus lizard reunion at the Windmill, that's for sure.

As would I.

me too. they sounded quite like their records and played the hits... nothing wrong with their performance it is just the whole reunion and the crowd that goes with it (including me) that i dislike.
Was that with Royal Trux at around veterans of disorder?

That's why I went. Pavment were about the most boring thing I have ever seen.
Actually Royal Trux were pretty shit and I loved them.

no... that couldn't have been a reunion show, if they were playing with royal trux. as both bands would still have been going.

I think it was the acadamy. As I recall Pavement had not played for a long time and the Brixon show was their last one ever.

Supposedly seminal band beloved by indie types everywhere - Pitchfork gave two of their albums 10s, an honour usually reserved for Radiohead.

I don't get it - the melodies are banal, the band's sloppiness seems deliberately contrived, the lyrics are complete nonsense, and worst of all the singer sounds like he's desperately trying to sound as blase and ironic as possible, as if he's terrified of sincerity.

What is the appeal of this band, and how did they gain such popular and critical acclaim?

How broad a knowledge of their recorded output and live performance are you basing your conclusions on?

No live performances, so maybe I've missed out on that front. I've listened to a reasonable number of songs from throughout their career, including many cited as classics ("Summer Babe", "Range Life", "Box Elder"). Everything has been mediocre except for "We Dance", which is one of the worst songs I've ever heard.

I don't mind them but I am probably only tolerant of them because at the time they seemed to be really good. I guess you had to be there kind-of-thing.

I find their slackness appealing. Please spare me all the divas with their earnest lyrics that, like, are meant to be all deep and shit.

i guess their music is not for you then, but thankfully for you lots of other music exists.
