P&O Ferries sacks workers and docks ships

wemakeyousoundb

hopefully not gimboid
P&O cancels services with 800 workers fired
wow
P&O Ferries has made 800 seafaring staff redundant, but some crew are defying orders and refusing to leave their ships in protest.
The ferry operator said the "tough decision" was made to secure the future of the business.
Union RMT said crewmembers were being "replaced with foreign labour".
Private security officers have been sent onto one ship docked at Larne Harbour in Northern Ireland, to remove staff on board, according to the RMT.

You know what,
I'm not going to be using P&O in the future, if they don't back off on this ...

Good Luck to the RMT, they are going to have their hands full.

Plenty of scope to tie P&O up in tribunal cases, I would think.
And some really snotty reviews on tripadvisor etc

Surely there is a better way to navigate around the problems covid etc has caused them ?
[Have P&O even tried ?]

Is it agency workers being brought in or use of offshore labour? I think Norwegian airlines as was used Thai cabin crew on Thai contracts which would have got round local employment rights such as minimum wage etc

AHH more joys of the unbridled capitalism many voted for.... repeatedly.
Some Tories have been 'describing it as 'one in the eye for the unions' apparently 😳

This believe it or not in The Telegraph

Revealed: Handcuff-trained heavies dispatched by P&O to ferry dispute

P&O has hired a private security firm to provide backup in the dispute with ferry workers.
The firm was asked to send 16 handcuff-trained officers to the Port of Dover in case of a "backlash" among staff after redundancies were announced.
An email sent to security guards beforehand, seen by the Telegraph, told them the job will last a week and they will be paid £14.50 an hour. It says:
You have been selected to deploy on a task in Dover that will be fairly high profile. This task will run for 1 week...
As of the 17th you will be dispatched by coach to Dover docks to assist the client in their delivery...
I am limited on information I can provide due to a non-disclosure agreement however, the client we are assisting requires 16 officers (handcuff-trained) to support their security teams in the unlikely event some of their staff become challenging. Essentially, our client will be informing staff of redundancies and there is a possible risk of backlash...
You will all need your uniform including cuffs and utility belt. You will not need body armour for this task.
It also reveals they were told to get to a hotel in the area by Tuesday and to undergo training on Wednesday.

Gary Jackson, a fulltime officer onboard the Pride of Hull said crew were informed they had lost their jobs through a pre-recorded Zoom message at 11am and had not received anything in writing from the company.

Pre-recorded Zoom message, fucking wankers.

Does anyone know the official jurisdiction of their employment? Might not be under English law, the sort of sneaky thing the employers might try.:mad: Don't know if they'd get away with it though.
Never thought of that but I would of thought through that because they use English and French ports they would of give by both countries laws ?

I am not 100% sure, but I think employment would be covered under the laws of whatever country's flag the ships operate under, unless they have a contract of employment that specifies it is subject to UK law.

It will be interesting to see how many of those 800 staff are covered by UK employment law and what their employment contracts say. Does it even apply in this case?

Seafarer working and living rights

Lots of pathetic right wing frothing going on about 'foreign workers' being brought in to replace UK workers online....

And alot of mad conspiracy theories about it somehow being connected to Russia.

You're missing an 0

I would have definitely thought UK/EU/French/Irish/whatever laws would have some relevance especially EU ones, it could well be that P&O are chancing their arm and are planning to argue that whatever laws are most convenient to them are the ones that apply. I have a feeling this will end up (yet again) being tested in court. What's with this handcuff-trained security guard shit though? I though only Plod could actually arrest someone.
