Osama bin Laden killed by US forces in Pakistan

Why didn't they arrest him? I mean they could have surrounded the house and starved him out if they had wanted to. We shouldn't take the impossibility of taking him alive at face value. My guess is that a decision was taken to not even try. First because the Pakistani's couldn't be trusted and second perhaps because an arrest and trial may have led to some awkward question like the role of the USA in creating the monster that became Al Qaeda in the first place. It is interesting however that the impossibility of catching him alive has been taken at face value

Muslims Against Crusades have put out a statement about Ossie's death - says the usual things, but (surprisingly?) doesn't suggest that the US/UK etc will pay directly for this. Hmm, thought they'd go into full on rant mode.

It'll be interesting to see what AQ/OBL-inspired jihaidsts will say over the coming days/weeks to this...

It would be interesting to know the final butchers' bill. It sounds like (whatever they call a) platoon of Navy SEALs, plus another on standby were the actual strike force. So far it sounds like 3 men and a woman were killed besides Bin Laden.

Certainly doesn't sound like they were willing to risk casualties to take him alive, but why would they?

<tinfoil> I'd love to have heard someone ask him about that party political broadcast he made in the Kerry/Bush election campaign though </tinfoil>

Exactly my thinking too. I personally think he would have walked away from any jury if the truth was told.

Partition - the gift that keeps on giving.

I lol'd at this! HaHa

Pakistan to end up as part of greater india would probably be a better idea Pakistan is a failed state with nukes
can't see anyway to reform governance of the place:(

This is true coupled with the fact that there are more muslims in India after partition than there are in Pakistan. Wonder how they would feel about being Indian again? LOL

I don't think there has ever been any serious intention to take him alive from the outset - probably for all the reasons you list and more pressingly, the likes of a protracted siege (as opposed to a raid) on almost certainly hostile Pakistani territory becoming a particularly thorny diplomatic/defence problem.

Exactly.

burial at sea for fucks sake . Since when was he admiral fucking Nelson too ? What the fuck is that about ?
If these guys were serious about a " war on terror" then the info he could have provided was priceless . The terrain wasnt any more hostile than the Triangle of Death they captured Saddam in . Arguably a lot less hostile .
For whatever reason we are being heavily bullshitted here .
And of course the conspiracy theorists are going to have a field day with it .

I see Bin Laden's death has given the BBC another excuse to ignore news events from the rest of the world. It's practically wall-to-wall bin Laden on the BBC News Channel.

pity they never did it during that royal wedding bollocks

and in other news...a horsefaced member of a genetically challenged family in London prone to massive inbreeding got married to a less horseyfaced person to pad out the gene pool . People cheered at the news .

But it's plain to see. He is not dead. He is being taken somewhere as we speak to be completely and utterly rinsed of any information possible. It's not that difficult to comprehend.

I'm sure he is dead. They would look mightily silly announcing his death like this only for it to be leaked later that he was still alive.

That's not really the issue for me. Is the world a safer place now that this has happened? I don't think it is.

Exactly. The really important issue is how this is going to effect US/Pak relations. This is the centre of the whirlwind right now and doesn't look good.
