Couldn't think of where else to post this, so hope it's okay to mention here...
Today marks fifty years from the believed date of the start of Day Of The Triffids by John Wyndham, first published in 1951. The date at the start of the story is presumed to be Wednesday 8th May 1974. Much of the first half of the book is set in London.
Although the year 1974 (or any other specific year) itself is never mentioned in the story, Wyndham has the narrator Bill Mason state that he's a post-War baby nearing thirty, and Wyndham had the story set far enough into the future to accommodate satellite weapons. However, early scripts of Wyndham's suggest that he'd also considered a setting of 1965 or 1976 with adjusted dates before changing for publishing.
Incidentally, I'd guess that when the novel was first published in 1951, the significance of picking a date of 8th May wouldn't have been lost on early readers - VE Day, new beginnings, a world changed for ever.
