Obama inauguration: Who's watching live?

There were some kids on the tube when I was coming home this evening:
Kid one: This is a great day for black people everywhere
Kid 2: Oh yeah, a black president
Kid 3: Black history month's going to be really easy this year

:D

genius! i wanna steal it. :D

What's that I hear? Oh it's the sound of millions of people rushing to alter Ted Kennedy's Wikipedia entry.

Apparently he was conscious when being loaded onto the ambulance.

CBS Stream here.

Did anyone else get the impression from his speech that he'd had a few weeks to look at the state of everything and realised that things really are totally fucked?

Yep I see where you are coming from. I think he has got a fucking nasty job ahead of him and whatever he does he is going to seriously piss some people off.

He's had a few months to do that.

I doubt he thinks things are totally fucked. Just mostly fucked.

Actual dramatic change towards energy issues, to start the transition, is what Im looking for him to actually achieve. Its the right time, things are buggered anyway, so may as well use the opportunity to make sure whatever comes out the other end, eventual recovery, is genuinely sustainable.

If Obama can keep enough people believing in him, he will take them along for the journey, and maybe they can actually have a 'war effort' like optimistic mindset that gets them through the worst of times, without needing an actual war to do it. Gordon Brown has been trying to instill the same mentality in the Brits, but our understandable cynicism gets in the way rather a lot.

Looks like Shoebox summed it up nicely:

After being sworn in, President Obama took the podium, and then did something strange. He spoke in measured tones and used words that appropriately shaped the point he was making. Also, he pronounced those words correctly, as if he knew exactly what they meant. It was weird.

Following a long-standing tradition, outgoing President Bush will leave a note on the Oval Office desk for Incoming President Obama. Though, Bush must have gotten this note mixed up with the one he left for the movers because it said, “sorry about the mess.”

I read that the averaged-opinion is that people are giving him 2 years grace. Whether that's long enough deliver on any one of the key issues, I don't know. I can see it looking promising in some areas by that point, but not 'won'. Nonetheless, of the possible people for the job, I'm convinced not only that he's the best choice based on what we know now, but that he'll still stand up to that measure a few years from now.

I wouldnt like to guess on the timescale because I dont think a lot of people are clued up as to the full spectrum of economic possibilities in the next year or two.

Theyve just been talking on the BBC 10 o'clock news about a subtheme of Obamas speech, that the American people are going to bear a good share of the burden in the years ahead. Apparently some people are already dissapointed that his speech didnt overinflate their hopes I think they wanted him to start talking about magic wands.

Yes. In comparison with some of his other speeches, it was a little more - well, not downbeat - but less giddy optimism. I'm assuming he's very aware of the near-deification that has been going on, and now has to slowly bring things back down to earth.

Today, in the middle of all the speeches etc, two teams of moving people were moving the Bush posessions out of the white house and the Obama posessions in.

- What happens if the Obama's don't have enough to fill the white house, after all its pretty big!

- Do they get dust marks around pictures that are a different size to the last ones, I guess they must..

:D

I did myself think "bet they don't have anywhere enough stuff to fill the place!"

Hadn't considered Bush losing his deposit due to "wall marks" though :)

And:

First day in the job and only 10 inaugural balls to go to ..

Their smile muscles must get tired, meeting all those people, smiling at the crowds, at the parades etc. I recon they should be able to be "grumpy chops" for a week at least after this.

Chuck D! Why oh why. He's nowhere near the full wankery of say Bono, but it's a bit random. Newsnight trying to be down with the kids?

Crazy satellite view from today:

THe people are gathered around the jumbotron screens there I think.
