Northern Ireland murals

Rimbaud

Well-Known Member
There doesn't seem to be a Northern Ireland sub, so I'm taking that as a stance on Irish unity and posting these here.

Been living in Belfast since February and have been gradually collecting photos of murals around the city.

These ones are from the area around New Lodge, a heavily Republican area (and council estate I think) in North Belfast.

Depicts the Irish potato famine:

Depicts the 1973 New Lodge Six massacre, when 6 Catholics in the New Lodge housing estate were killed by British army snipers and Ulster Defense Association loyalist paramilitaries, in what is suspected to be a case of collusion.

Demand for more houses to be built:

Jim O'Neill memorial flute band mural:

Not totally sure what this one is about:

Demand for the release of Republic prisoners. "Saoirse" is Irish for "freedom."

Think this is about some female militia's centenary:

William Drennan, a founder of the United Irishmen Society who revolted in 1798.

It says ‘they died for Ireland’s cause’ in Irish at the top of it. The imagery is that of the Phoenix rising from the ashes. This imagery which originated in Greek mythology was incorporated into Irish Republican ideology after the burning out of Catholics in 1969 in Bombay Street i.e out of the ashes of Bombay Street arose a Phoenix (the PIRA)

1969 the formation of PIRA.
But who are the 21? That's puzzling me. It's not the Hunger Strikers...there were 23 of them in total.

Not all the hunger strikers died either. It could be the roll of honour for one of the battalions of the belfast brigade depending on when and where the mural is painted. Do you know where this mural is Rimbaud?

Yes Pickman’s you’re right the symbol of the Phoenix has a long tradition in Irish Republicanism.

Yes, all the murals I uploaded are on or near New Lodge Road. That's North Belfast, pretty close to the centre -I think the area may just be called New Lodge.

Yeh it’s called the New Lodge I used to hang about with a few people up at the flats there.

Don’t remember seeing that mural though. Still not sure who the 21 people are definitely not the hunger strikers though.

Could include 1980 hungerstrikers or 1981 men who came off. Or volunteers or residents from the area

I know. In total there were 23 hunger strikers.
It's not them.

As you say it could be a list of volunteers in the area who died in active service.

It's hard to make out the faces and names.
