Ireland prices?

Last time I looked euro was 1.25 so a 5 euro pint is 4 quid. Not great but not terrible.

Top tip btw order currency to collect from airport. I got 1.21 2 weeks ago versus a walk up rate of 1.12.

Couldve got a fraction more if I'd gone to london to get it.

Glad you had fun Onket!!

And Dublin ISNT a kip, I live there and wouldnt live in a dump...like all places, it has its good and bad sides. Dublin's been lookin glorious in the sunshine and there's loads of cool stuff on in the city every weekend. We just had loads of ace celebrations for Bloomsday on June 16, and outside the city, there's loads to do, like visit Howth for some gorgeous walks on the harbour and delicious seafood. Nigma sounds bitter, maybe lives in a kippy area...:hmm:

Didn't you say that you once lived in Croydon? :)

Well it's blats relative.

I moved back to Dublin from London (Tottenham/Sth Wimbeldon) after 5 years. My 5 bestest things about living in Dublin.

1. Randomly bumping into mates. Seriously Dublin is the perfect size for regularly bumping into people you know.

2. Its a great cycling city. Perfect size for the bike scheme. I lived in a moderately out of the way suburb and yet was in the city center in 20 minutes, 10 of which was cycling down a canal side bike lane with no traffic.

3. The food is terrific.

It is expensive though.

That's only 3 things and the first one only applies to you!

I've been to Dublin a few times and have never bumped into anyone I knew.

Snip/.

Can you explain for us older listeners what blats means? Have tried to look it up on-line & can only come up with 'Bleating like a sheep' or 'moving quickly'. Neither definition seems to fit in this context.

Thanks.

Blates. Urban75 slang for blatantly.

Look man, I've been all over the world, and Dublin is the only place where I've regularly seen people off their faces on drink and drugs in the street, in the middle of the day.

Even in Russia I didn't see that sort of thing.

Okay clearly you're going to the nice parts of the world.

Like Freetown, Sierra Leone?

The building boom I saw in Accra (Ghana) did remind me of stories of Dublin in the early 60s, but there again public drunkenness was a not a phenomenon I observed regularly.

Public drunkeness is not just a Dublin phenomena. For example I'd never go out in Dublin on St Patrick's Day, the air of menace and drunken violence in the air reminds me of say Leeds or Swansea on just about every Saturday night there.

But the idea we should shift the capital to Belfast.....

The Kiwis put their capital in Wellington because Auckland was too big and dominant even without being the political capital of Aotearoa/NZ.

In 1865. You want to shift the capital of Ireland because you don't like seeing drunks in the day in Dublin.

Last christmas I was up in Belfast and saw someone get glassed at the winter market in the middle of a Saturday.

I'm trying to get my wife round to the idea of moving back. Mainly for all the reason you mention. The only stumbling block is getting a job.

I really fucking miss Sandymount Strand on a summer morning. Beautiful.

Dublin is one of the best towns in the world, and steeped in culture and literature. You will rarely find anywhere with that kind of charm. Depends on what you are into though, the old man pubs, buskers, museums, Moore Street sellers, Georgian townhouses, and amazing restaurants make it so special. The restaurant thing is a new phenomena but we have always had a good reputation for French food, since the 20's and the days of Jammets. Dublin is flawed and there are ugly run down parts but the same can be said for ANY city. Its true that you see heroin addicts and pissheads running around O'Connell Street most days, but thats a fact of Dublin. Avoid those places as you would anywhere and its great to analyse and just sit in pubs people watching. Irish people who are not from Dublin tend to dislike us, and call us 'jackeens,' say we are knackers, or up ourselves and other such crap, we know we hail from a fantastic city over 1,000 years old that beats any town in Ireland by a long shot.

Gazing up or down Parliament Street is a real treat in summer or winter. Though I wish the Corpo would do more to protect Dublin's architectural heritage.

Homesick now.

Have you ever seen this documentary narrated by Ronnie Drew about Dublin? Get your wife to watch it!!

I don't know Ireland so I'm not going to comment but it's certainly something we should have done in the UK decades ago.

Then there's this:

Because Belfast public transport is run with swiss like efficiency. Or infact public transport anywhere outside of say zone 6 is reliable anywhere in the UK.

You haven't been to Helsinki in summer then.
