New "UK" plate required from 28th Sep, wtf

existentialist

Tired and unemotional
So, as of 28th September, "GB" will be no longer a valid designation on a car, whether on the licence plate, or a sticker. It must be replaced with a UK designation instead.

Sounds a bit like a piece of Brexit bullshit to me, but I don't have any idea where this has arisen from. Government page here:

Your link says GB" is still valid although you can have "UK" instead.

So if you have a number plate with nothing on it do you actually have to do anything? Or is think only when driving abroad? That link isnt clear...

You don’t have to have anything on it. There used to be a requirement that the manufacturer of the number plate had to be identified on it. Not sure if that still stands though. Even travelling abroad you don’t need anything on the plate. A magnetic GB sticker does the trick usually.

You will be able to have the Union Flag with UK on the number plate an that is valid except in Spain (Malta and Cyprus too, but no one drivers from here to there). In Spain you will need a UK sticker too.

Based on the Twitter accounts of various traffic police groups, there’s a bit of a clampdown happening over dodgy plates, from incorrect spacing to those stupid 3D letters etc

You can get a pair of UK number plate stickers for £1.49, if you need a larger UK sticker for Spain, that'll be another £1.39, both prices inc. postage.

I actually can't even remember if my bike's plate has the GB bit, but if it did, what would happen if I cover it with, say, a sticker saying Fuck Brexit, or even better an EU flag?

Not having the right sticker leads to all kinds of local copper interest in central and Eastern Europe. Then they start asking to see your fire extinguisher/ first aid kit and you find yourself with a on the spot fine. And no receipt

What a bizarre thing for civil servants’ time to have been spent on. Who gives a fuck?
At least you dont have to put up with the nonsense we have to put up with in Ireland. I guess this must be for people who forget what country they're in, but over here you have to have IRL on the left of the plate beneath the ring of European stars... Oh, hang on a minute, are we now gonna have to get new number plates with one fewer stars???
Anyway, our number plates show the county in which the vehicle was registered. Its represented by the letter or letters in the middle...eg. DL = Donegal, TS= Tipperary South, KY = Kerry, D= Dublin. But its also a legal requirement that the county name is written at the top middle of the plate... in Irish!!! ... Why???
Some cunt got paid from taxpayer money to shit these regulations into existence.
