Southend is the newest one which does work as a London airport, 30 minutes from Liverpool St.

Ah yeah, saw the wrong logo. It's definitely got fuckloads of stairs right now though - way more than it used to, with a long walk from the road to the station. They could have put ramps in. I'm feeling sceptical though and suspect it might be like the step-free access at King's Cross that makes you or your carer walk so far that it's not really very accessible at all.

You can't get much more tubey than the Waterloo and City that was a British Rail line till the 1990's
On the other hand the Northern City Line out of Moorgate, at least the tubey bit of it was part of the Northern Line till the 70's and the East London Line was part of the Tube network before being Oranged. Also most of the Wimbledon branch of the District line runs on National Rail tracks, albeit ones that are only used by the National Rail in exceptional circumstances.

So they haven't decided the fares yet. In fairness to Bungle upthread, if they do make this line more expensive than normal tube journeys within the same zones, that will be a decent reason not to think of it as the tube. 'The fast route for rich city types' instead.

I could stomach and even understand a higher fare than that of the Tube network. But given that Heathrow Express charges £20+ for a single journey, unless Crossrail has the cheek to ask upwards of £12-£14, I can't see many people choosing the Heathrow Express option.

Someone should make stickers that say ‘Crossrail’ in the same size and font as TFL use on the wall mounted tube maps. Stick them all over.
Whilst they’re at it also do ones that say ‘Fleet Line’ for the Jubilee and ( more for fun than republicanism) ‘Viking Line’ to replace the Victoria Line.
