Musicians you idolised as a teen who turned out to be dickheads

You're a rare man, Johnny. Did you not idolise and obsess about the lives of artists you liked when you were young? I thought we all did that, but most of us grow out of it.

No. I considered musicians etc to be people with a gift. They made music that I loved. But apart from their gift, they were just people to me. Maybe that was a function of having a lot of musician friends. Some were pretty good, but they still had all the same foibles and failings that the rest of us have.

you shouldn't write people off if they offend you, you should try to find out what they are on about. you aren't going to find anything out by just doing what you want to do
I don't want/need the opinions or justifications of either racists or religious nutters. Oh, whoops! You've been banned!

Anyway, I just remembered crossing the road to avoid an erstwhile hero, Nicky Wire, because he had betrayed me by quitting wearing eyeliner. Teenagers are so hilarious. I must ask my sister to remind me what it was that Teenage Fanclub did to betray her. It was equally petty, but a momentous betrayal to her teenage mind all the same.

Same as when you suddenly realise your dad is acutally just a fucked-up person, same as you are, not the person you've always looked up to. This is why I no longer have any desire to meet anyone, who artistically, I used to look up to. They might end up like Nyman, (sorry for using the mail, Ive spent 20 minutes searching for a link!)

Were you keeping it 4 REAL?
Heehee, yeah totally.

A mate of mine from college crossed the road to avoid Morrissey once (this was probably in the mid-80s) cos Morrissey was a famous tosser according to all his school mates. A couple of months later he fell madly in love with Morrissey and the Smiths and cursed himself forever for not taking the opportunity of saying hi to him.

Where/when/how did he do that Tom?

This was his Facebook status update, on 11 May 2010 (when the ConDem coalition deal was finalised, IIRC):

Just back from Pressure Drop and watching Cameron on the steps of No10. I invite anyone who wants to kick my ass to do so below.
Sounds like someone who knew he fucked up to me. Maybe he was still a naive idiot, but that goes for me too, as I too voted Lib Dem in the general elections in 2010, and would have probably done so without Bragg's endorsement.

He did the right thing. By crossing the road, he still can love Morrissey and the Smiths - rather than thinking "He was a bell end of the highest order" and having that cloud his love of the music.

My opinion of Morrissey roughly shadows that of Johnny Rogan - "Devious, Truculent, Unreliable".

In fairness, it's an easy mistake to make. Lots of Irish people made that mistake with the Greens, and I might well have voted for the LibDems if I had my shit together (recent immigrant). I wouldn't now, obviously.

Ha! Truculent!

I thought that was a quote from the Judge in that royalties case though, no? If I remember correctly the Judge had some choice adjectives for Morrissey.

Bragg voted lib-dem every time since 2001 though, attended lib-dem conferences, said they had 'the best manifesto' and who has argued since the coalition that this is 'not a tory govt', that it in fact is potentially more progressive than labour, that it will introduce reform of the House of Lords and other progressive reforms - all driven by Nick Clegg's progressive instincts. Look at this filth from the week after the coalition was formed. And his arguments for voting lib-dems in all those elections in his seat would still stand today. He'll do it again.

Bragg's a fool. The Greens clearly have the best manifesto of the mainstream, but I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them thanks to the Irish experience.

As I said, he's a liberal (with a small l, but all the same) these days. I first heard about how "disgusted" Bragg was at the Clegg forming an alliance with the Tories via my mother, so I knew there was some truth to it. Of course he's also happy to lend his "tactical" support to Labour as well...

Yep. Did you ever see the now long deleted adultwork profile him and one of his shag buddies put up? Without doubt, 100% proof it was him.

Yeah i did read that stuff, someone linked to it on here when the story was first in the news... I don't't know really. I guess the problem is it was anonymous... It made pretty grim reading and it hinted to quite a messy personal life but as for it being proof, I don't think we can judge that.... Tbh I still hope it's not true not because its him but because of the nature of the offences. Conspiracy to rape a one year old? :(

I'm the same as JC. I certainly never idolized any music stars/groups. I liked a lot but didn't care enough about them to be able to say I idolized them. I always thought buying posters of bands and writing their names on your pencil case was a bit wanky. The only music memorabilia I ever bought was in the Ska revival in the late 70s when we all covered our Harrington's with pin badges.

So it was. Morrissey the musican, and Morrisey the Person, are two fundamentally different concepts. I love the music he does. I just think he is an utterly reprensible human being.
Well, as I've established I don't "do" separating the two. In many ways I'm still like a teenager (which is lame, but there's no point in lying about it on the t'internet).

I didn't mean it as proof he was guilty of conspiracy to rape a child. But it was proof that yes - it was him on the profile, working as a male prostitute / rent boy and without condom use either.

must have had a bash to one of your favoured musicians though? You are only human

And i'm saying he's still a lib-dem supporter. All the reasons he has given since 2001 for voting lib-dem remain. In that clip i linked to he explains why Clegg being in govt with the tories is a good thing, not that he's disgusted, he's glad that Clegg can now pressure Cameron into lots of progressive measures. Whereas you are not going to vote lib-dem ever again.

Sigh... another case of idiotic wet liberal is wet liberal idiot then. :(

I've always been a little suspicious of the political nous of someone who said that hearing The Clash changed his life, and then decided to join the army few years later...

The liberal (with a small l) weeps at home in his Dorset mansion...
